New to poker need help

Hello all am new to this forum and to poker just got my own poker set and now started to play online but stuck with a few things, if any one could take the time to help me please.

At the start of the game is it just the small and big blind that has to put a chips in or does everyone have to.

Typically it's just the small and big blinds (which rotates around the table, with the person to the right of the small blind being the "button" or dealer).

However, if you also have antes, then everyone has to put an ante in. This is done before the cards are dealt. The blinds would put the ante in before the blinds.

If it's just the two of you, yes. Heads-up I believe the big blind is also the dealer.

Sorry Juicee, in Heads up action the Small Blind acts as the Dealer.. SB is first to act pre-flop and second to act in all the other rounds heads up..

Oops. Huh. Learn something new everyday. It seems to me though that the big blind should have the advantage of acting last? :dontknow: But, you're right of course. I remember now playing heads-up at Titan, Jesus Lederer and I were wondering why they did it the way you describe. Now I know.

I always thought SB was to dealer's left so dealer is BB. That's how I've always played.... will have to check next time I'm heads up!

I'm trying to figure out a way to explain this that makes sense.. If you're 3 handed then the button is the dealer obviously with the SB to his left and the BB to left of the SB.. If in 2 handed play the BB was the Dealer than he would act first pre-flop and 2nd in the remaining rounds..I think we can agree on that.. using that scenario then if you were to say the BB was the Dealer then they would be completing the Blind which we know they already have.. Since you have to have a SB and a BB the SB would act as the dealer completing the amount of the BB blind first while having the advantage of acting 2nd post flop.. That's the best way I can think of to explain it!

Who gets dealt first? The SB to the left of the dealer or the person left of the BB?

He's talking about heads-up. So SB would get dealt to first.

Like any game u have to play to become an expert. You can watch golf all day long on tv or in person but it wont make you a player. Playing poker online is a great way to learn-play for free even. You could see 100++ hands and have a good idea about rules and hands. I watched poker on TV for a while but it still took me a while to get my skill level good enough to be a winning player online. I also suggest playing omaha-helps u learn what a good hand is and how often draws hit.

Where did you get this info from? In partypoker heads up the big blind acts as dealer - i checked.

different sites do it differently, i believe prima does it that way too, with BB as dealer, but with most sites, full tilt (i think) & pokerstars and tropical and titan, etc... all have the small blind act as the dealer, and yes i've been heads up on all of them. This is also, i believe the way it's done in all major live tournaments. I know it doesn't necessarily make a lot of sense. the only explination i've ever heard is that it's done to give the button more stregnth and encourage action.

Well, they are called "blinds" because they are a forced bet that is done before any cards are dealt. Therefore, it's like "betting in the dark" or "betting blind", since you have not seen your hand yet.

I think that before you start playing, watch a table for as long as you need untill u understand how the hands are dealt and how the blinds work. if you try to play and learn it might confuse, or frustrate you. so just watch and pay attention to the order. (repetition is the key for memorization) once you got that down start playing at cheap ring games and then you'll be on your way to becoming an expert!
