I'm moving to New Jersey in a few months and was wondering how the poker scene is. I'm going to be playing a lot online and live because I heard online is legal there now. Also does that mean ultimate poker will be up by the time I get there (Dec-Jan).

I live in New Jersey, so I can vouch for you on this one. Ultimate-Poker is a toss up to be honest. I don't know how good that site is in compare to sites like Bovada, Carbon, Black Chip, etc. though. Being that you named this thread the New Jersey/Atlantic City poker scene, I'm assuming you are moving to South Jersey. Atlantic City's poker scene is really good especially at casinos like the Borgata, Harrah's, and Showboat. If AC will be further from you than Philly (and even if it isn't to be honest), I would highly recommend trying out Parx Casino. The poker action there is - for the most part - better than most of what I've seen.

I can't really say anything about the North Jersey scene if that's where you are moving to...being that I am from South Jersey, and I've never really bothered to check up there. All in all though, I hope this reply will help you find a poker scene that is right for you.

PARX has a great reputation....

I have a lot of friends in Philly and 2 avid poker players among them.

The action is good and the lower limit tournaments are AMAZINGLY well structured.

Matt Glantz is a consultant/host/TD(maybe not officially, but has huge input) at Parx and no one knows poker/all the games/cash and tournies like Matt Glantz.

I live in Central jersey and have been frequenting Sands casino in Bethlehem PA with great success. Great atmosphere there with plenty of action. As for online, all 12 major casinos in AC have applied for an online poker license and some plan to have sites up and running by November. 2 of the sites are 888 and bwin.party (party poker I believe).

And to Enzo, yes Bovada is probably better BUT it is illegal to play on still. Should the gov't wanna crack down on it, you're screwed where as playing on Ultimate or 888 or wherever from NJ will be legal and your funds will be much safer.

Thanks a ton for the info, I was hoping there would be some legal online options before I moved and it looks like it'll probably be the case as I don't move til probably January. I couldof sworn I read somewhere that pokerstars was trying to buy a casino so they could offer legal online poker in jersey as well, is there any truth to this that you know of?

That certainly happened but unfortunately the casino declined in the end, which turned into a lawsuit. And in the end, it's not gonna happen now. Pokerstars will probably try again some other way to get in on the action though.

If 888 or Ultimate poker becomes legal for real money in New Jersey, I will definitely consider them, but for now I'm going to continue to play on Bovada, Carbon, and Black Chip. I'm not very worried on terms of a government crackdown because I really don't have much money on these sites. I pretty much use online poker sites to improve my skills in real life, and the way I do this is to try building a bankroll from playing freerolls. If I make some money doing this, that's cool, but the amount that I am making by doing so is negligible....although it may not be for too long if I get accepted into the CardsChat freeroll club ;) .

BUT chances are, if Ultimate or 888 become fully US legal, this site will begin having freerolls for those sites in the future as well, and then I won't even have to bother with Bovada or any of those other sites. Not to say that I won't...but chances are I will stick to the safer sites if they ever become available.

Ya this is excellent news, as long as player pools aren't segregated.
