I'm not sure of what year this was/title/name of the people involved.
Netflix had a documentary on poker about 6-8 months back and it involved this author who wrote for a prominent newspaper (New York Time?) and he wanted to write about the poker craze. He ended up entering a tournament in order to have first hand experience as writing material. Long story short, he ends up winning the local tournament, beating one of the Poker Legends (Football Player) and a cash payout.

I know this is all pretty vague, but if someone can recall the player/movie/article resembling what I described, please let me know. Thanks!

It sounds like you're talking about the documentary "Breaking Vegas: Prince of Poker" about Jim McManus. I saw it several years ago. As I recall, it was pretty bad from a poker player's POV, but was probably entertaining for people who know nothing of poker or the wsop.

Breaking Vegas was definitely written for the general public, but seasoned poker vets can still find joy and inspiration in the story of someone climbing the ranks and making it to the show.

I watched that years ago. I was wondering the same thing the op was asking about, cool, I'm going to check it out again now that I understand poker. Thank you for this post op, and thanks for the reply d ! I'm sure thats the one the op was thinking of.
