Was curious as to if anybody else was following this...UK poker pro Roberto Romanello has come up with a new tournament format called Multi Prize Pool.

Ultimately, it allows people to buy-in to the same tournament (and start with the same number of chips) for different buy-in amounts. The goal of this seems to be to attract more people to play in these tournaments, and it would also allow recreational players with smaller bankrolls to be able to buy-in and sit at the same tables as professionals who are buying in for a much higher buy-in!

The first Multi Prize Pool tourney will be tonight, January 10, at Dusk Till Dawn.

I do have a couple questions about what would happen in some hypothetical payout situations. This tournament format is obviously new and innovative. It will be interesting to see how the first tournament goes.

Here is a link from pokernews.com about the new tournament format:

sounds interesting but could also turn out to be a dumpster fire and quite chaotic

This seems really scamy

Think of the chip dumping potential

Also I can just see pro poker players sitting around thinking how can we get more suckers into the large buy in events.

Although it would be sweet to play Ivy for only 50 bucks.......

The thing that I was thinking was...since there are 3 different prize pools, does that mean that there are 3 different bubbles? And 3 different 'hand for hand' sessions?

It took me a while to actually realize how this could encourage collusion...

Having someone who bought in for the minimum buy-in ship their chips to someone who bought in for the maximum buy-in?

It would suck to end up on a table full of people who are on the top tier and you are on the bottom tier.

Ya this is the first thing I was thinking when reading about it.

with it being possible to cash or win their respective prize pools without having to actually cash in the tournament, they can be freerolling on the prize pool 1!
This is wack. You already won the first place prize but you keep playing!

So you buy in for min end up with a ton of chips all other min players are gone. Okay then you dump your stack to someone on a higher tier and get payed more(threw a shady deal). I mean whats the point in playing if you have already won.

But whatever I am game. I am signing up for the first one to hit Colorado. :)

I think the idea is to give weaker players the chance to play against better players, for example Sam Trickett is playing it today.

And as for collusion it doesnt seem likely to happen imo, Dusk till Dawn is one of the best card rooms in Europe, if not the best

Sounds very interesting. After the first tourny we will have a better idea of how the payoffs work, etc. :icon_thum

No no no that's not how it works. Read the article, they have a nice picture in there that explains it pretty well. I'll give an example.

Imagine the multi prize pool tournament with 3 different buy-ins, and thus 3 different prize pools. $5, $25, and $100 dollars.
-If you are buying in for $5, the $5 goes into prize pool 1, and you are only eligible to win pries from prize pool 1.
-If you are buying in for $25, $5 goes to prize pool 1 and the remaining $20 goes into prize pool 2. You are eligible to win prizes from both prize pools 1 and prize pool 2.
-If you are buying in for $100, then $5 goes into prize pool 1, $20 more dollars goes into prize pool 2, and the remaining $75 goes into prize pool 3. You are eligible to receive prizes from all 3 prize pools.

So basically, if you buy in for the minimum, you are competing against the entire field, because all of the players are eligible to win money from prize pool 1.

At least that is how I interpret it. Does that make sense?

"with it being possible to cash or win their respective prize pools without having to actually cash in the tournament, they can be freerolling on the prize pool 1!"

You already won first place money from the higher prize pool, but you continue to play to try and gain prizes in the lower prize pool.

As for the freerolling after you win prize pool 3, this could be possible I guess. If you bought into prize pool 3 (the largest buy-in), and everybody else in the prize pool 3 busted very early, then you could have theoretically won the 1st place money from prize pool 3, when only 50% of the people in the tournament have been eliminated.

And then, yes, you would be ultimately free rolling as you keep playing. I would look at it more like already being ITM, and continuing to play to try to gain more

And then who do they decide who the "winner" is? Is it the person who has all the chips at the end, or the person who wins the most prize money?

Theoretically, if...
-The 1st place finisher bought into prize pool 1.
-The 2nd place finisher bought into prize pool 1.
-The 3rd place finisher bought into prize pool 3.

Then for net payouts...
The 3rd place finisher who bought into prize pool 3 (the maximum) would win 1st place money from prize pool 3, 1st place money from prize pool 2, and 3rd place money from prize pool 1.
-The 1st place finisher would only win 1st place money from prize pool 1.

Even though the 1st place finisher actually beat the 3rd place finisher (and may have even knocked them out), the 3rd place finisher will walk away with a higher payout.

For the record Ducky, I was commenting on potential collusion problems due to the tournament format, not due to the room. From the articles I've read, all of them say that Dusk till Dawn is probably the best room to try out this new format.

As for the first part of your quote, I completely agree. How cool is that? You can buy in to the same tournament as Sam Trickett, for four times less than he is buying in for?

Well, this sounds like someone(s) are going to think they won more money that they get and there goes the furniture.

This sounds really fun. I wonder if US rooms will start to adapt to this style as well?
