As it seems a few others have echoed: I've found motivational issues in games like Chess where there is a tremendous amount of time, work, and energy involved and yet zero tangible (or really intangible) gain possible. In poker, the motivation is obvious: Money. Once you put money into the mix, the game becomes more important, is something you can justify spending countless hours on as an adult, and offers you a chance to reap rewards for your time and education in the game.
