Yesterday, May 5th i played in the most horrible hold 'em tournament ever. Its a weekly hold 'em tournament held on an Air Force Base at an officers club. when i heard that it was losing some players, i decided to check it out and see if i might go to their weekly games.

i wish i had'nt and i know i wont be returning.

Heres the set up of the game:

-$12 buy in
-start with $500 in chips
-6 rounds. 3 limit, 2 NL, final table is NL

-round 1 5-10 (40 min)
-round 2 10-20 (40 min)
-round 3 25-50 (40 min)
-round 5 500-NL (20 min)
-round 6 1000-NL(20 min)
-Final table blinds go up every 5 min till the end (30 min)

here are the Pro(s) of the tournament:

-the blinds start off low enough vs your small starting chip stack, so you can play around with your chips.

here are the Cons:

-Not everyone starts off with the same amount of chips. Since it was my first time playing i only recieved $500 to start. People who were there for before get cards stamped and each stamp = $100 extra dollars. the person sitting next to me had about $1500 starting vs my $500

-The dealers were inexperieced (volunteer). The table had to basically teach the dealer the game and explain basic stuff. explaining split pots was the worse and it really dragged the game along. in 40 minutes in the first round, the blind only passed me once.

-there is not SB and BB. the dealer will post the blinds...which makes blind stealing useless.

-Chip change rules (the worst). the chip stack we start of with is: 1 black = 100, 12 greens = 25 each, 20 yellows = 5 each. heres where it gets really stupid.
we use the yellow and green chips for 5-10, 10-20 blinds. so what about the 25-50 blinds? they did a chip change for everyones yellow chips > green chips. so what they did with the extra chips? they had the table draw high cards and whoever won got the the extra chips. BS!

-at the final table...the winner is determined by who wins all the chips right? NO..its determined by who has the most at the end of the time limit. so basically, the chip lead just had to sit back and fold everything the last 5 minutes of them game and he would be the big winner. BS again!

..and what if there is a tie in chips (there was to determine 3rd) give them a few hands to play to determine? NO, what they did is they dealt 1 hand face up and the winner of that hand would take 3rd. AK lost to an A3 because a 3 flopped. How wrong is that? someone works that hard to make it to the final table to have his tournament placing determined by a luck draw.

-90% of the players are bad players. most are retired and the rest are active duty AF'rs...but they still sucked. 90% of the people on my table would call every hand down to the river...they just didnt know how to play.

someone called capped bets all the way down with 10/6 off vs. a bored showing 10/K/A/4/9 and was mad when he lost to and A/Q for most of his chips.

one player contantly yelled for the board to pair. "pair the board" every single hand. i flopped a set when he requested a board pair. it paired on the turn, and we capped the bets. he flipped over 2 pair (pair on the board and a card in his hand that he flopped) thinking it was good. i showed him my boat.

i had people show disgust and then say to me "you know what i fold? i folded 4 cards to a flush." ..."wow" i told them "thats some bad luck there."

augh...i hate playing bad players. you might think its better, but its not. Good players you can bluff and make moves on, bad players you can to anything because they'll call you down.

HORRIBLE!!!!

Wow,

I can see why you will never go back to that game. Sounds more like a lottery than a poker game. You are better off playing freerolls online. LOL.

So true, problem with bad players is they are completely unpredictable. you never know if they got the nut or if they are just being stupid. nut vs stupidity is infinately more difficult to read than nut vs bluff. stupidity is just so broad and all encompassing......it can lead to anything.

Seriously strange tourney, don't think I'd play again. You mean to tell me people go back and enjoy that set-up?

i dont think anyone really thinks of the set up. its in a bar/club, most are retired looking for a good time and the rest are young-middle aged adults looking to get a little drunk and get lucky. i think all of them know what the game is, but only a handfull were actually playing.

Eurk, that must suck!! I wish I will never play in a tournament like this one! Just to have dealers that don't know the game, is disgusting!!! The rest is even worst. People starting with different amount??? WTF!!! etc...

Hmmm....just a thought, but I think I would rather slam my nuts in a sliding glass door than play with those guys and their bizarre rules.
