Hello,

New member, long time lurker. Great forum here.

Per doctors' orders, I'm pretty much bedridden for the month of November due to a back injury.

So, I've been thinking to myself to use this time to improve my poker game.

I'm not wanting to deposit right now due to unforseen future bills, so I'm gonna go the freeroll route. (I know, freerolls suck...effin donks abound.)

My plan is to play at least a couple a day, analyze my play, read at least 1 book, and hopefully cash in on some of these suckers.

I'm not a beginner, but I'm not advanced. I have a solid understanding of starting hands, position, pot odds.

Anyway, I thought I'd post this here, post some hands, results and thoughts, and hopefully get some feedback from some of the players on here. I think there may be some interesting hands to post from these.

I guess to start off:
What freerolls do some of you play? What are your strategies in these?
Any books you recommend?

Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks.

A good start is pokerstars and FullTilt. They do have massive fields but FullTilt runs one a day for your country with usually £100 prize pool and a few per day with £150 prize pool. PokerStars also has several every day for entry to a Round 2 Tourney is you place in the top few out of thousands (72 out of 9000 I think for NLHE) and one each day to get into the nightly 90kGTD tourney. FullTilt also runs several of the Round 1 ones and some regularly for Tournament Dollars.

Strategy, in general for freerolls will be to stay VERY tight early on, because you'll usually get paid off with your monsters. You will get some horrible bad beats because people are gonna call your shove with a gutshot and hit, but more often than not when they do, you're going to win. Good luck with it pal.

Thanks for the input JohnBoy.

Haven't played freerolls much over at FullTilt. I have deposited over there: built the bankroll up, then down, swing city, finally went on tilt to a string of bad beats and lost it all.

I like the variety of freerolls PokerStars has (Razz and 8 game in particular). In my opinion, it's good to get away from NLH at times.

I'm with you on early strategy. Often it does get frustrating watching the maniacs push with Ace-rag, J9, etc and donk up to become chip leaders, while I sit there and try to stay disciplined.

It's also frustrating when I get a guy right where I want him, where I have the best hand and I know it, get all my chips in, and he calls and sucks out on a gutshot, a two or five outer, or some sort of runner-runner straight or flush.

I guess that's all part of the game.

Yeah, it'll happen loads on the freerolls. Also, just seen PokerStars are running PCA Final Freeroll tournies. Entry starting every 2 mins or so, 540 players, top 2 get in. You gotta be quick to get in, but they're literally AIPF constantly because people can just reg to the next one. Crap shoot but good fun. FT also run a rush Freeroll, I think Reg is at 940 ET but double check. Fun cos it goes much quicker being rush.

You'd also profit from downloading PT3 if you haven't already, there's a 60 day trial. Helps a lot especially for going back over hands. Just go to their site and run the 60 day trial. Only works for Hold em though, and you can spend 15 days on Omaha, nothing for the other games.

I played in a couple of those PCA tourneys over the weekend. Knocked out early in first one, finished 6th in the second. Crapshoot is right.

I'll have to look into the FT Rush Freeroll.

PT3 huh? You use it? I've never used anything like that before. I see it mentioned alot. I'll go check that out.

Thanks for the info man.

Playing a Razz freeroll over at Pokerstars right now. 18th place out of 73, so it's looking good for me to get into another tourney.
