Most touchpad drivers these days offer a sensitivity adjustment that helps prevent accidental contact from your palm or fingers from being interpreted as mouse actions.
Or do like I do and use an external mouse. I have them for all of my laptops, I only use the touchpad/stick if I'm really on the go and have the laptop literally in my lap. And even then sometimes I'll use my thigh or the seat next to me with a wireless/bluetooth mouse. If you do this, check for the feature to disable the touchpad when an external mouse is present.
