For the most part I agree that Matusow is, at best, a boring nit. He's certainly not even close to the skill level of the top players in the world.

That said you're looking at just one hand here and, if I remember the story correctly, there's a big metagame consideration that Mike was apparently taking into account too. Basically he only had the one buyin for the game (because a nosebleed game like HSP is way higher than Matusow could afford to be playing) and if he lost the pot he wouldn't just lose the money (which I think was staked?) but he'd lose the TV time as well.

My response the same as your other thread:

People need to stop making judgements of players based on the few hands they watch them play on tv lol.

Totally agree with Dakota.

Do you have any feel of the dynamics going on at the table or do you know about history between two players?

If mike had any kind of a likeable attitude and didnt come off as such an ass toward everyone people would say he is one of the greatest players out there just because hes on tv playing. Only his attitude salts their judgment about him.

Mikey's the man. One of the few real people in poker's higher echelon. What you see is what you get.

I love him. I love bacon. I love you.

the play wasnt as bad as this. look at the players face when Jennifer Tilly checks back the river. Irrespective of any previous dynamics thi is the worst play by any Pro I've seen

Personally I think mike matusow is one of the best pmaha players around.
He also is no wimp at hold em either.
I think the respect he gave helmuth when he folded kk was great.
There is A reason why he has been successful at poker for many a year and has wsop bracelets to boot.
As far as lingren goes I think his and my style are just different.
Dont think he is a horrible player.

I agree...the only thing mike has for him is that he's entertaining to watch although if I was at a table with him, he'd probably give me a migraine to the point i'd call his big bets just to bust out and get away from him

That's precisely the reason he runs his mouth, to distract people and put them on tilt. Once his opponent gets offended and makes a bad decision to try and get revenge, that's when he's succeeded. In spite of his showboating and verbal vomit, like it or not, he has to have some decent level of skill otherwise he wouldn't be playing at the levels he does.

I think your giving Mike to much credit... I don't mean about being skillful I think he is a great player with tremendous passion for the game but I don't think that he talks so much at the table to put the other players on tilt even if he does do it by talking. I think talking so much and so annoyingly is just the guys personality, though he does take advantage of it well

You watch one episode and know that he is a bad player. Thats like losing one hand of online poker and deciding it's rigged. I believe there's a thread for that.

I never realized how bad gold was cause I was so uneducated at poker when I grew up and watched him. After watching the mike McDonald hand where he shoved 33 out of position post flop gets called by Jj then says "that's what I thought you had" and when the two outer hits on turn he cuts McDonald down again for making correct play.

Then a poster here commented about how many two and three outers he hit in his big win. I kinda wanna go back and watch the highlights to see for myself how lucky he was.

I find it interesting people on CC generally seem to use the words "poker" and NLH cash/Mtts synonymously (could never spell this word)...

Matusow is more of a split pot specialist who also played some NL so he played through the boom, etc.

Lingren was know always as a worldclass LHE player ....cash mostly.

So, I am not sure anyone in this thread really has a clue how good or bad either are really at "poker".

I love the "the mouth". He's a fantastic player that can get under your skin, which makes dangerous at the tables no matter what game he is playing.

I doubt you're good enough to know what even is bad or good.
Lindgren is a gambling degenerate. If you had a clue what you were talking about you would know this.

Mike Matusow is sooooo bad that he is currently sitting in 2nd place on the final table of the WSOP $5k buyin Stud Hi/Lo (< that is bad! lol).

Yes, the list of below par poker players is extensive. Chris Moneymaker, Jaimie Gold, Mike Matasow, Patrik Antonius.......it's mind boggeling watch them play. You sit there and say to yourself, "HTF did they get as far as they did?"
