...ask him what software, spreadsheet, or other method he uses to track his stats or at least his W/L, hourly, and bb/hr....

...he says "I have a good mind , so I keep it all up here in my head."

Lessons of the day: Always use some record keeping to track your progress. Don't kid yourself or lie to yourself. Let the data speak for itself.

And if you're actually down that much at 1/2 maybe that particular stake/game isn;'t for you. :D

Seriously though. I've heard a lot of players say that if you're not tracking at least your Win/Loss at the bare minimum and you think you're a winning player, you may never know if you're right or wrong.

How well do you know this person?
Did you meet them at the tables?

They are either bad or bluffing you for action.

I've always found tracking data that isn't related to actual hands attractive and interesting to look at, but not that useful info actually helping you to win in your game. I know a lot of professionals who have felt that hey have got to a stage where they no longer feel that tracking results on a day to day basis is that helpful. The main hung is to study and analyse your game, which I assume that man wasn't doing. If you are making the most profitable plays possible then the results will follow without you knowing them exactly. I'm pretty sure this man was not doing that either. I think that the main problem with people like that is that they can convince the self that they are playing as profitably as possible and massively overvalue their own skill because they have never studied.

Anyhow, being 100 buyins down is very rough (although not the worst thing I've heard) and the guy needs to change up his game a lot. He should also probably take a long break, and perhaps study the game during that time.

Hopefully one day the guy can become a winning player. Like... I sort of hope he can become a winning player :p

Well said. While I do think tracking win/loss and profit data is crucial for the long term, I definitely agree that studying and analyzing hands is equally important. Obviously if you're playing live poker it's a bit harder than online to get all your hands for review so it's a different beast. I wondered if this player played online at all, I've found I do better live than online BUT online now has become a better tool for improving my game in all environments and seeing a lot more hands (and being able to database them if needed for later review) definitely helps with game theory, strategy, math, and overall competency in one's play.

I'm going to work on taking notes more after my live sessions too (maybe using note feature in the App I use and/or a small notebook) just to get an even better feel of my mood, mindset, plays, etc. One thing I do like to do after a session is go over questionable hands (won or lost) in my mind and analyze my play (and also through posting hands here sometimes). I try to run through the hands over and over, study strategy on these spots, study odds, texture reading, etc on these hands.

I agree that people like this person probably vastly overestimate their ability. And if they aren't tracking or even studying a little bit than they're likely not nearly as good as they think they are.

Not well but I've talked to and played with him before. Nice guy but can be a bit of a hot head when cards don't fall his way. I took his entire stack within 15 min of me sitting down this time. I think he exaggerated the 20K number but people definitely easily got into his head. So not the worst player and gets poker but definitely overestimates abilities.
