Does anyone on here consistently win online and does anyone win enough to make a living just playing online?

Yeah, it's not that hard to make a living playing poker. I have a friend who does it. He's still in college, mind you, but his poker is paying for his tuition without a problem.

I don't really need too and waste a fair amount of money sometimes.

Wouldn't mind giving it a shot and seeing how playing full time goes.

I haven't worked full-time since October of 2004. I do work part-time still, however I don't play online and haven't for about 2.5 years. I play cash games and home tournaments in and around the Central Florida area. I am soon going to venture back into the online arena where I was relatively successful in the past, hopefully at that time I will be able to parlay it into a career.

Poker as a full time job is a HORRIBLE idea in my opinoin. Bad beats and losing streaks are fine when you are just playing for fun. If it means that you dont eat for a week or only make a few hundred dollars one month, you are going to be pulling your hair out.

well while you could make an arguement that online poker isn't the securest way of making a living, there sure is a ton of money to be made! While technically not by choice, at the moment I am a PRO! Only thing is the doc is gonna have to give me some valium or xanax because there is nothing that makes me blow my stack like a NO GOOD suck out! OH I need to learn how to effectively deal with those players!

I know there are people out there who do make a living from poker between £2000 -£5000 a month and they are female. They play or work should i say on ladbrokespoker.
But myself i could not deposit the sort of bankroll into any site to get started.
But i know a few places at certain times of the day i can quite easliy make a days wage.

I believe so :)

Hi all,
Yes I believe it's very possible to make an income at playing poker, it does depend on what your playing. I think if your talking about playing multi-table tournaments then you probably couldn't earn a living at it unless you had firstly a nice bankroll and secondly you'd have to win at least two major tournaments per year to afford the "knockouts" you will inevitably get at a lot of multi-tables. When I say major tournaments i'm talking where the prize money exceeds $100,000.
On the other hand you could quite easily make a living at SNG's as you would come in the money a lot more of the time than at multi-tables, it's not unusual for me to make around $500 on a good day playing SNG's, a bad day at SNG's with not such a good bankroll would be down to around $50 to $100 but that's simply because i'm playing smaller $ tables and not so many.
I don't play as often as i'd like because I do a lot of other stuff but I certainly believe I could survive solely playing poker if I had to.
Tips:
I think the best way to start is to get whatever bankroll you can afford to lose, let's say you got $100 that you would probably spend at the pub/bar but decide to play poker instead. Because your bankroll is only $100 then you should only play $5 to $10 SNG's, you can't guarantee a win every time but you can be pretty sure of a place every time or at least 2 out of 3 games if your consistent. This means you have enough to enter 20 $5 SNG's or 10 $10 SNG's, play 5 games one day then 5 games the next day, if you've come in the money 7 out of 10 you should be in a fairly good profit, if you lose for 10 games in a row then forget about trying to play for a living, you just ain't good enough.
You can even try this at $1 SNG's just to try it out, $10 gives you 10 games, write down where you came each game and how much you won, if you came 1st 3 games for $6 and 2nd in 4 games for $4 and nowhere in 3 games that would give you $34.00 in total minus $10 = $24 profit, this is just an example I know there is like a 10c fee and the prize money is probably different but you get the picture. If you can make $24 profit playing $1 SNG's you can see how possible it is for me to make $500 in one day playing $50 SNG's.
Don't know if i've actually answered the question or just gone into one of my waffling posts ( probably ).
I bet there is quite a few here who make good money playing poker, they generally keep quiet about it, not sure why.
Good luck at the tables :)

I personally don't shout out numbers because not really interested in getting in a who's "johnson" is bigger contest:icon_thum Not quite making enough to give up the real world job search, but probably closer to being a pro than not. If that makes any sense;)

I'm closer to being a fish than a pro, but I still make money. What does that say about the losing players?

Playing Professionally

Points

1.) You are a professional, you play for money, and if you've ever won a dollar, you are already a pro.
It is important to have that mindset, when you sit at the table.

2.) There are online specialists making obscene amounts of money. Some prefer it you get less rake, more hands per hour, anddont tip dealers or waitresses.

The comments about less rake and more hands per hour are right on the money. And the tipping part too.

Another advantage to playing online is not only do you get twice as many hands per hour in a game, but you can also play more than one game at a time.

i would suggest concentrating on one table at a time though, if you're playing with real cash...But that's just me

I think if you're confident in your skills, and you're just grinding it out on a regular basis, playing multiple tables is the surest way to make more money. Theoretically you'll double or triple your hourly take, and it will tend to tighten up your preflop play. I usually find that with less time to think about it, I tend to find fewer dumb reasons to call too.

I consistently place/win SNG's. If I tightened up my play a bit I'm sure I could live off what I made.

I played live for the first time(in 20 years) last night at a nearby casino. I was worried because I didn't have much cash when I went into the place. Maybe I just got lucky, but I won over $200 in a few hours playing a 3/6 table. I did that playing the same way I play online. If I averaged $200 everyday I certainly could live off that, pay the mortgage, feed the kids, etc...

I play SnG's mostly and am normally quite succesful but had a terrible day yesterday. Went out 6th in $30 buy in, 4th in $10 and 3rd (2 places paid!) in $20. I kinda gave up. My A-5 straight went to flush, re-raised a 200 chip raise and the guy went all-in. I was kicking myself doe not calling his 200 raise but felt i made the right move.

I was gutted though

Hey XdmanX -- Gee I remember your getting after me for saying that I win most of the hands I play.... I think your statement above that you posted here is just as egotistical!! So watch it. OKAY?

 :hmmmm2: Theirs NO way I could make a living at poker. First of all you'd have to have a nice size stake to begin with. Think of all expenses, traveling, hotels, etc. You'd have to be awful lucky and good cards to stay in. It takes a combination of these. Wish everone good luck that they can make it.:wavey: :pepsi:

Like in the words of many poker pros, it's a tough way to make an easy living. I have dreamed about doing it, but when I see it on TV, it is looks tough. Whenever I move back home to PA, I will probably play in the occaisional small real money tournaments online (with like a $5 buy in) and the occaisional satellite.

You know, I had this discussion with someone on another forum and he just tried to push his point of building a bank roll bit by bit so hard, I decided not to discuss it any longer. He doth protest too much.

My thoughts are - if you look at the pros making really good money at poker - many came from money - meaning they owned a chain of video rental shops, is a patent attorney, own successful restaurants, Wall Street wizards, etc. and brought in their own bankrolls and built on them. And they weren't $300 here $300 there, but $10,000's. Others are MIT grads and are braniacts and had the game well pegged before they started. You really need an edge one way or the other.

The older guys like Brunson and Cloutier played in the old poker rooms of long ago and built their bankrolls over the years - true grit natural poker players.

The young online pros seemed to go from poker stars to TV Stars in minutes.

So I'd say anyone has a chance, but its really difficult to try and build a bankroll bit by bit and then think you'll be living off it unless you are VERY talented. And if you are - I hope to see you at the final table at the WSOP. :)

And another thing I was thinking about - HAVING to play poker everyday in front of a computer screen probably gets just as tiresome as day trading to make a living. The pressure is THERE! Maybe try to become a LIVE pro - at least you can travel the world and stay in some fantastic places. LOL I'm packing as I type!! J/K.... :D
