I'd be interested in hearing how people define the term "skill" as it relates to poker. How difficult is it to acquire this skill? I'm assuming it's not the same sort of skill required to perform brain surgery or to shoot 4 under par in golf.

So much of what happens in poker is beyond the control of players. They have no control of the cards that are dealt to each player or of the sequence of the cards as they fall on the board.

Very frequently one hears "skill" defined as getting one's money in good. But when a player is dealt KK and another player is dealt AA, is the player with KK really any less skilled than his opponent when the money goes in pre-flop? Or when a player who is dealt AA calls his opponent's shove on a flop of 644, is he really any less skilled than the opponent who was dealt A4?

I like this question/comment. Oddly great skill in this case would be KK deciding that AA actually existed and KK decides to fold.

In that case would having been dealt KK be considered good luck or bad luck?

I still consider the game top be 75% skill and 89% luck. And that is not a typo.

Yeah , definitely Luck plays a role in short period . Everyone will agree with it .

But if you constantly depend on luck for longterm results , might not work .

But short term , yeahh :D haha

So would you say then that assuming everyone can acquire the basic skill of getting your money in good that the real skill in poker is being able to recognize and no get beat by the luck.

If we assume the absolute mathematical nature of poker, and for example get in a 60/40 hand, does the '60' holding up mean anything with regard to luck?

No. But if we get in 5 of those hands, and they all hold up, does that count as luck? How about 10 times?

Thus is the real problem of this question, we have an almost impossible definition of luck that to compare luck vs skill, is tantamount to comparing cubic yards of ocean to dog fleas.

Since I came up with the comparison that poker is 80% luck and 80% skill, I seem to have gotten luckier. <<<<<WTF

I agree that skill is about 80% while luck is 20%. When I tell other about the game I always quote this along with the example of AA vs 22 and how 22 will win 20% while AA win 80%.

If there was a way to be consistently lucky, like long term luck, then I'd choose luck over skill. However it's impossible to be always lucky, so being skilled is the next best thing.

Your skill level will help determine how much "luck" you have. Luck is, therefore, dependent on skill.

Luck is fickle, it can all be going your way and suddenly youre broke. If luck is you greatest ally, be prepared to lose the battle.

I think a good poker player doesn't have too much of either but he'll make that ass fold on the turn :)

I've studied numerology, im also quite keen on astrology and tarot runs in the family Im a strong believer that instincts can determine more luck. Having the balls to go with your gut
''fortune favours the brave but not the stupid''

I've witnessed 2 or 3 tarot card readings and every time it was spot on to a point where I was left speechles.
They touch on numerlogy and instinctive signs, randomly I was told I would play in a cards tournament a few years back (my second time) and the woman said your going to be playing in a tournament, go with your instincts dont be affraid to risk. and she also said ''I can here click click click as the wheel spins'' Stop at black 6 Red 7. I final tabled the tournament and won almost 2 grand on roulette
from $20 6 and 7 were my final numbers in order 6 to 7

She also said I will travel to tokyo and foreign country's . big win in tokyo

If you can be lucky and win, why would you need skill?

Personally, luck never works out for me and skill eventually does. I just try to get lucky in tourneys early on, otherwise rely on skill.

well, poker is gambling so you definitely need luck, but its the skill that differentiate the pros, they dont need to get lucky that much, just play the man or going with good odds

Two quotes.
One from a dealer (I'm sure not the first to say it)
"Make your own luck"
2. From a golfer.
"The more I practice the luckier I get"

When I was in sales we had a saying that the luckiest salesmen were the ones that worked the hardest.
It also applies to poker.
In sales if you work harder you will generate the leads which will often lead to landing the big account.
In poker if you work hard on the craft of playing poker you will ultimately become better than the ones that do not.
This does not apply to those crazy all in shoot outs on poker stars of course where luck rules.

Luck matters sometime, but according to me skill is more important than luck. If you have perfect knowledge about anything, then you can make your day by your skill. I believe in skill because I can improve my skill, but I cannot do anything with my luck so its waste to think about it.
