Hello all long time no come on here. Today Abdi and me have talk about luck vs skill.

I think luck is better than skill I tell him because, with luck you win more times than you lose. But he tell me skill is long run in this many hands or months or years and luck is this many times so luck loses to skill but that makes no sense because if I playing a game and I get good hands and lose to luck that means I lose that game, no? So why luck no beat skill, but skill beat luck? And I lose that game playing good hands against a lucky player, so how is that good for me?

My English (writing is not so good), but my speaking much easier for me and understanding.

Luck does happen in poker but does it happen consistently to the same person? Probably not so in the long term, skill and knowledge pays off over luck.

Luck will always exist in the game of poker though.

I think the bad players will said that poker is a game of luck, and the good players will say it´s a game of skill. Personally i think it´s a game of skill which luck it´s a part of it. Only lucky makes bad player win and only unlucky makes good players lose.

It is strictly a numbers game. The more times you get it in ahead you will win more often than not. Volume will show you over the long run that skill is WAY more relevant than luck.

Skill only. Poker is a game that sometimes punishes you for making the right decisions ("bad luck") and rewards you for making the wrong decisions ("good luck"). That is what keeps bad players playing (and makes the game profitable for good players), the bad players remember the times they got rewarded for making the wrong decisions and try to find the magic formula for doing that. But in the long run they end up losing, just like gamblers playing games with a negative EV always end up losing in the long run.

short term -- like less than 100K hands....luck is the king!
long term -- more than 100K hands ....skill is the king
simply the fact is

for possibility, it only works on large size of samples!:D:D:D
the law of large sample , makes the results towards close to your skill expectation....therefore long term skill is the king!

No one who plays worse than his opponents will win in the long run. Everyone will get lucky and unlucky, but the better players will end up with the money.

Luck is temporary, class/skill is permanent.

Anyone can win poker based solely on luck, but if you're talking about winning over a long period of time consistently then skill is the most important thing.

I lost my chips in one MTT tournament one guy from Serbia kicked me out solely on lack of skill but exceeding luck. A hand ago he pushed all in with 22 and he won because others had AK AJ and so on and only small cards came... I adjusted my strategy and when I got 9s 10s I noticed only like 300 ppl were left and bail out was 4,78 USD and therefore I pushed all in... what I didnt expect was that he pushed all in and forced others to fold and he did that with K3 (not even suited) and guess what: 10 J Q /A/ 3 came and I lost - who would assume the odds of this to happen...? Me clearly not :)

If you play enough volume then luck should spread out evenly but if you are skilled vs a fish and you play him heads up 100times yeah the fish is going to suck out on you a percentage of the time, but you'll beat him more often than not, thats a gtd.

luck vs skill

i would rather be skilled. dont forget luck works for everyone, not just for those that depend on it. with my skill i only lose to you when you get lucky. but your luck comes and goes my skill is allways here for me. combine skill and a run of good luck and you dont stand a hope of beating me. world champs are the result of skill and good luck

On any given hand, luck trumps skill every time. Over the long run, skill trumps luck because over thousands and thousands of hands, luck SHOULD break even for all players. Play solid poker over time and you should be in the green.

I dont think luck comes into it, until your playing stiff opposition
for example,
me personally - If I played the micro sit n gos on some sites I would cash 98% the time

but when every starts trying the same thing it becomes a battle

i think in cash games luck will eventually pay off for you. But tourneys i think luck kills you even if that lucky person doesnt win. doesnt matter cause it put you out. and the next tourney the same thing can happen and with the weird play ive seen latley it will. gl

Of course luck is, and will always be, part of the game. And we've all heard it said that you can't win a tournament without getting lucky once or twice along the way. I don't disagree. Of course for some of us getting lucky means flopping a set against an agro player's top pair. For others it means making incredibly bad calls and hitting two outers on the river.

In the long run skill is supposed to prevail over luck. In the meantime some luckbox is getting into four-way all-ins with 10-7 suited against players holding Q-Q, K-K and A-K and winning. Two hands later the same player will calls a 5x pre-flop raise with 3-6 suited. His opponent hit top two pair on a A-Q-5 rainbow flop and bets 2/3 pot. This guy finds the nerve to call and sees a 7 fall on the turn. There was no way he was going to fold to an all-in on the turn. And of course he catches the miracle 4 on the river. Now this guy has just knocked out four good players, or at least three. I'm not sure how strong the fourth player was. Now this guy is in the chip lead twenty minutes into the tourney. Thirty minutes in he was gone. It just goes to show that it's easy to get lucky, but it's hard to stay lucky, unless your name is Jesse Silvia.

Luck is nice and all, BUT you cannot rely on it.

You can not only rely on skill, you can also increase it. Neither of these factors exist with luck.

You need luck and skill to beat the game, if you are a good player without luck,
is not possible to win.
