For the British Masters poker events, each of the events says:

"Alternates accepted for the first 2 levels"

What does this mean - can't find any mention of any "alternates" anywhere else.

Thanks!

It means they start with a certain # of players say 1,000 then when player is eliminated another player gets his seat with a full chip count. And those alternates get in to the game in the order they register so its possible that registered players way down on list may not even get in. The wsop did this one year before moving to the RIO as they just didnt have the room at Binions, and that was before having multiple day 1's

...just thinking...would there be an advantage or disadvatage to being on a list, then coming in after people get knocked out

1.advantage:::///..people get knocked out before you een start, so your closer to the money

2.disadvantage...although your starting with full stack, you stil behind on average chip stack.. and the no of M thing..(think thats how its explained)

so is it good or bad to be an alternate

I think it's pretty much a wash - a few people have been knocked out before you've risked a single chip, you start with a full stack and you go to your table as an unknown quantity. On the other hand, other players have had a little longer to build up their stacks and get reads on each other so you're starting from behind in that sense.

Alternates are only accepted very early in the tournament though so in the grand scheme of things it doesn't make a great deal of difference.
