Hey guys,

I'm going to be playing poker at the casino for my first time this weekend. I'm very excited, but also very nervous!!

I was hoping to get some live pro-tips from you guys. Things that work for you, and things that you've seen work for others. Any bit of information helps.

I can not stress the importance of this and have said it every time someone asks this question - learn the rules of live poker at the place you are going. Yes you can accidentally go AI, yes you can get a penalty of doing things wrong, there is no computer to do the things for you so be careful. Mistakes as a live player can not only make you do something you didnt want to, but may also give others tells about your hand/playing style - none of which is good for your hourly rate.

If you have questions about live poker rules hit me up

otherwise - pay attention to what others are doing, at all times, live tells can be easy to spot if you are looking

If you have questions about live poker rules hit me up

Hey, thanks for the reply!

My main focus has been studying live poker tells actually.

I'm aware there's casino rules/etiquette, but I'm really not up to speed with any of it. Could you give me some of the general rules that'll force a penalty, or make you lose respect? .. I want to maintain my image at the table, and I don't wanna be labeled as a fish within the first 5 minutes of play.

Cheers,

Watch the players who stand out the most, particularly with regular over bets, see which ones show the goods when the cards are up. The ones who do it consecutively, be wary in pots with them.

Verbalise everything. You want to make a bet or raise a bet? Announce "I'll bet $30" or "raise to $75" before you place any chips out. Otherwise you risk screwing up: if someone bets $20 and you want to raise to $100 but you throw a $100 chip out without saying anything, that actually counts as a call. Also if you want to bet $50 but you make a "string bet" you might end up betting only $5 instead.

Totally disagree. I would verbalize nothing. Verbalizing things will eventually give any good opponents potential tells and eventually most likely solid tells. Just learn the chip denominations and before you act make sure you are moving the correct bet or raise out. If you get in a habit from the beginning of never verbalizing and moving chips forward in the same manner every time you have fixed a problem that many live players have and are not even aware of.

Don't jump into a game right away. Hang around the rail and watch what the active players are doing. You could then join the smallest fixed limit game offered. You won't win much, but that's not the point. Getting used to live play is the point. When you feel ready, switch to whatever you're playing.

the rules that will get you into the most trouble;
1. acting out of turn - may be binding, may give off tells, may get you trapped
2. string betting- may not allow you to bet what you want
3. showing cards with action pending - penalty, may be dead hand
4. verbally announcing jocular action - like saying all in as a joke, but now its binding
5. mis-raises, undercalls - may not be betting what you want to be

most of all jsut pay attention, do not get all wrapped up in whats happening around you, follow the action

If you decide to play a tournament a safe bet is if you are moved from one table to another make sure your chips are kept in plain view and in a rack, some places will require your chips not only be visible but to also be in a rack (I would ask before you move) I always put my chips in a rack before I move. This rule violation can be an early end to your tournament.

Another one I see a lot is in tournaments is don't expose your cards with any action pending (including action pending from yourself) usually results in a warning the first time then sitting out for a specific time period for any subsequent violations.

Edit: Another one is electronic devices (Phone, Tablets etc.) The rules vary a lot from place to place but you can be pretty sure that being on your phone or texting during a hand is going to be against the rules also some places may require you leave the table before engaging in some activities with your phone. Just ask the staff and they should be able to give you some clear guidelines on what is and is not allowed.

One suggestion I would give to you is to find your game face. The best players have no expression when they play hands. They look like statues. Check out Tom Dwan playing a hand. It is important to learn to read other players, but don't give yourself away.

it's easy to tell the type of players they are in live. you can tell pretty quickly if someone is loose or tight, if they're limping alot of hands etc.

There are few times in life when you get to pay for specific education and can actually figure out what you intend to learn, and then how to apply that knowledge.

If you take the approach that your first trip to play poker at a casino is just that, a learning experience that you are willing to pay for, you will walk out with much less disappointment.

The live game is still poker, and not so different from the online game, but there are a lot of distractions that will prevent you from you from performing at the comfortable level you think is satisfying.

You will be distracted in ways you can not imagine yet. Many of these distractions will persist thru your 3rd or 4th visit. These are all part of that education process.

You will get distracted most by what goes on on the table. You will make procedural mistakes, you will watch others make procedural mistakes. They will piss you off, you will piss yourself off!

All of this is part of the First Visit to play Poker at the Casino educational process. ONLY BRING THE $$ YOU ARE WILLING TO LOSE!

But don't think of it that way. Think of it as the payment for admission to a fun experience!

be careful every player, every gesture he made at the end of each hand when I see books to associate each gesture for each board to flop, turn and river if he had something on the flop as was manifested, if something did or did not turn as not reacted and most importantly pay attention to hands and eyes
