I was just wondering if at casinos it is considered bad etiquette to stand at a table and try to get a read on your opponents before sitting down to play?

Yes, that would be considered bad etiquette. You could be asked to leave the area if someone had a problem with you standing there. You would be better off sitting and folding hands. You would only be paying the blinds, and you would get a close-up look at tendencies.

I don't let people stand behind at the casino. Yes it's considered bad equate. However at the Indian casino I go to frowns on you moving because of table balances. So you might want to choose your table wisely. I avoid tables with a bunch of people sitting with 2x or 3x the max buy in.

TY, that is what I figured. I have watched a higher stakes table that I'd never play, but I felt like I was doing something wrong even though no one said anything.

This is one of those things where the only 100% accurate answer is "it depends".

Most casinos (at least, the ones here) won't let anyone other than staff and players near the table, so it's kind of a moot point. Also, most of the time you won't know which table you're being seated at so how do you know you're watching the right table?

Funnily, it's actually more likely to be allowed at higher stakes tables, where they tend to have a more anything-goes approach as long as your money is good and the players at the table don't object.

In general though, I wouldn't be doing it and I wouldn't be comfortable if someone was randomly standing around behind me while I was playing.

You better get permission from the floor manager first. They may let you do it under certain circumstances.

The first time I visited the Cherokee Casino in Tulsa, I asked the FM if I could observe their one and only 7 card stud table. I didn't have much time, and the waiting list for the table was prohibitive, so he let me. I watched for about 15 minutes--no problem. When I walked away, the FM said to me, "They're tight, aren't they." And they were.

The casino I go to sort of allows it, but you can't stand right to the table. If you are like 2 - 3 meters away, usually there is no problem. However, players might ask security to ask you to stop watching. I believe this is more because you could see players cards and give some signals to your friend at the table, so keeping right distance is key thing.

The casino set-up really controls this more than anything. When they have a 'room' the intent is to keep the table play semi-private. Few (if any) rooms will let you just walk in and stand around. These aren't blackjack or craps tables in a high-traffic aisle.

Wherever even an imaginary 'rail' is established is the 'no pass' line. If you do happen to find a poker area wide open, I wouldn't stand within 2 feet of a live table and never, ever crowd a player's seat.

As usual this is the correct answer imo.
At the Gold Strike in Tunica there low limit poker tables are only seperated by a 36 inch tall rail and u can easily sit at a bar or a slot machine and get a read if u so choose but I would suggest just sittin down and postin blinds to do so.

Depends

I see everyone here is commenting on Casino's etiquette but what about outside the Casino.I play often at a Bowling Alley right down the street from my house and actually know most of the people there. This is a room off the bowling alley and separated from the main hall anyways what I'm saying is we often just chat or what not but I believe this has to do with the fact everyone knows everyone and its not at a Casino_Obviously you never bother players involved in a hand, but I think this is a situation on where your at exactly.I was also at Motor City Casino in Detroit and you are able to walk around and watch from about 2-3 Feet.I would not be close to anyone at the Casino and just wait till I land a seat at the table however.I think it's a commonly un-written rule most people tend to follow anyways.
