Yes - it is the same live. The reason is that players could be discussing hands and none of the rest of us would know it.

Assuming you're playing in a country where English is the main spoken language then yes, this is typically a rule for live games, particularly in casinos. In other countries it's common for the native language AND English to be allowed (pretty sure this is the case at the wsop events in france, for example)

Exactly how rigorously the rule is enforced is another question though. It might be enforced in a major televised tournament, but other games are a different question.

As someone who just plays regular low-stakes cash games I've come across many situations where players have been speaking in other languages to each other (and, memorably in one spot, a dealer speaking to a player in Mandarin) but I've never seen anyone be penalised, or even seen any other players speak up about it.

English is the rule as other players could be discussing hands, which giv them an unfair advantage.

You can probably report them high stakes games online probably have more of a "hey English only buddy" vibe more then the lower stakes.

*unquote*

On TV I've seen PA and Zigmund speaking in a different language to each other and Mario miniari and the loose cannon speaking Italian to each other at the tables but its much different with trusted pros on TV where it can be monitored then it would be with strangers you never met or heard of.

Yes, but there are very poker rooms where you can chat on other languages, and it's better for us, because if some players discussing their hands you can translate the speech to Google translate and see what they had :)

Ive run into this quite often at tables in atlantic city.. The dealers usually say something if there are people talking a lot in a different language..

There was a situation at a table i was involved in with two people constantly speaking in another language to eachother even during hands.. It got to a point where i had to say something to the pit boss because they would talk to eachother during hands it was just me and them and always played hands together.. They ended up getting removed.. I doubt most people have negative intentions but its good just to avoid any question

In german state casinos its only allowed to speak either german or english. U can call the floorman if they start to speak turkish or other language, In Chezeslovakia I have been in Kings casino and it was a mixure of all languages and no one spoke against it.

It depends which country you play in so be careful playing away from home....

Recently came back from Gran Canaria and played Casino Meloneras in Maspalomas...... I would NOT recommend ANYONE who does not speak Spanish play there.... I don't maind not understanding players who play a straight game and don't discuss hands between each other but there was so much collusion gong on it was unreal...

I got knocked out fairly early, my old man was still in. He has shoved hand previous and doubled up, looked down at aces and shoved again hoping players would think he was doing this fairly light and call. The button began discussing his hand in Spanish with 3 other players. Clear as day, the words "CHIP LEADER" and gesturing in between Spanish speaking confirmed it (as if we even needed it confirming at this point as it was fairly obvious through out there was MORE THAN 1 PLAYER TO MOST HANDS).

Without a doubt, the discussion was along the lines of:

BU = "Do I call, I fancy this"

Not involved players = "Yeah you could probably call there but....etc"

Not involved player = "If you call and you lose, he'll be CHIP LEADER and then he won't do a deal and we can't chop BUT its up to you..."

Then he folds straight after....

DON'T play it, its a waste of 110-150 Euro depending on add on etc....

I noticed that he allowed to speak English but every day I see the Russian players to talk in Russian and nothing prevents them.
I think that this rule applies only to the final table.
