You can get pokertracker for free if you're happy to sign up to and play at some of their affiliated sites, so it can end up costing you nothing.
It does provide lots of useful statistics to help you track your profits and losses, and to work out how you can improve your game.
For example, you can see how profitable playing at different stakes is proving to you, you can see which hands are resulting in profits, etc.

I'd recommend downloading the trial version of it, and trying out what it can do - you can store 1000 hands in there, which should give you some idea of whether you like it or not, and whether you find it helpful.

Alternatively there are some ones which offer live advice (including PokerOffice), but all of the decent software packages offer some kind of trial version to allow you to see which one you like best.

Actually, I think the trial version of PT will only allow 100 hands. I have Poker Office and I would rate it a solid 10 (on a 1-15 scale).

PO Positives:

LiveTracker is included and provides current stats overlay for any table you are playing at the time...with PT, you have to purchase an addon.

Simply layouts and easy to navigate.

Customizable charts and graphs.

(This one I don't know as much about) I have read that the database has a larger capacity and operates more efficiently than PT...but I can not confirm this.

PO Negatives:

LACK OF DOCUMENTATION. I don't know what PT had, but PO has NOTHING for version 2 and only a simplistic manual for version 1.

When using LiveTracker, I do not have access to player chat. This is the case on partypoker and may be true on other sites.

Personally, I don't think you can go wrong with either PokerTracker or PokerOffice. I would only consider these two to be serious choices as they have a majority market share (with PokerTracker being far more popular) and, therefore, more likely to offer support and future improvements.

I'd agree that PokerOffice is great. One tip (lifted from the review on my site) is that you can open up a table that you're thinking about joining, and start the Live Tracker going for a while before sitting down. That will allow you to get stats on how the players there play (how often they see the flop, fold on the river, raise, etc), before you start playing. If you can start it up half an hour or so before you hit a table, then you can get information based on enough hands to give you an idea as to how they play. You can even start it up and have it watching 3-4 different tables to collect those stats all day long, and then have a good collection of information about many players styles so that when you do hit a table you're more likely to have some reasonable information about your opponents.

Starfall...great idea...just one problem...

Unless there is something I don't know, LiveTracker stops tracking stats unless you are actively in the game. I know that PO originally allowed you to track tables that you were not sitting at, but, from what I have read, this has changed. I read somewhere that party poker got PO to stop the practice of mining data from tables you were not playing at.

Anyway, let me know if I am wrong on this one...but whenever I sit out a hand (or simply miss a hand due to time), LiveTracker stops tracking and displaying stats for me.
