I got to thinking that many of us embark on various bankroll building challenges and within that group of players, some likely have dreams of going from the micros to the nosebleeds and making a name (or at least a living) for themselves playing poker.

That said I'm wondering if anyone has any source/links on lists of pros or names of any pros (who have been documented as doing so) that grinded from the micros to the level of pro. Perhaps this can serve as inspiration that hard work can pay off.

I read a lot of negativity surrounding poker like it being impossible to beat, "never going to make it out of the micros," "poker is dead," etc. But we all know poker is far from dead and people can and do put work in to become better players, with some striving for poker greatness and achieving it.

Obviously poker isn't easy. If it was we'd all be millionaires already. But some have made it , so here's a few pros I've found who have been documented as going from the micros to the highest stakes and biggest poker circuits. Sure not all of them grind Feel free to add to the list and if YOU have "made" it from the micros to regular mid-high stakes play, share your story:

Doug Polk -

Obviously many know of WCGRider and his now famous 2007 thread on 2+2.

Nanonoko -

The guy is legend for his grind online. He might be the all time leader in most hands played in shortest time frame.

durrrr -

The $50 deposit to greatness story. Of course we know durrrr definitely took risks and didn't BRM himself early on, but the tale of taking the $50 and running it up is one many players dream about. Just when you "make it" make sure you use BRM so you don't end up broke.

So what other players come to mine? Did you "make it" yourself? Any players you know go from $2NL or $5NL to become mid to high stakes regs?

I looked him up. That's crazy the volume he put in to do so. Does he still play?

Maybe one day your hard work will pay off and you'll be the next poker hall of famer.

NoI don't think so, think he was from the states . He would play 40 at a time and just shove good hands and fold bad ones. don't think that play style works now a days.

I don't think it's possible here in the states to even get that many SnGs going at once anymore, let alone half that number.

What about reimroc222 from canada? I don't know but I always see him in micro stakes although he has some huge cashes. Maybe he just likes the game and grinds it. Plays the smallest stakes , $0.10/360 and also some $1.10 MTTs. He plays 20+ tables simultaneously. Some more info about this poker beast ??

I think most top online pros at least started out at the lower stakes at some point. Most of them keep a much lower profile than the ones you listed though so we are less likely to hear their stories.

Err.. Annette Obrestad? Well, I met couple players but don't remember their nicknames. I met some girl at the table, other players told that she turned 1 into 10000 for a year. She played Razz, cash game. But I noticed in Razz on poker stars: the higher limits - the weaker players. So it can be true.

The chances of building up a bankroll from micros is probably close to 0%. It probably comes straight down to the cards you are dealt. The problem is, in order to make money you have to put some of the money you won on the line. Either you build up extremely slowly and rarely have bad days, or you try to essentially double your money or more every time you play. In the first case, it will probably take close to 3 years or more of straight good poker to make it, something very few people are capable of. The in latter, you are basically putting all of your money on chance and get 1 outed and you will lose a lot of your money sometimes. Not saying its impossible, but you have to play amazing poker to increase your bankroll by 1000000%.

Gabriel Goffi also, but he grinded very hard, getting to the online highstakes. Nowadays he doesn't play poker too much i guess, he opened a highstakes academy in brazil and help people with self development, with his own learnings from grinding in poker stakes. His story is very interesting, if you search on youtube you will find, and its also very motivating. Besides him there are a lot of players who came not only from the micros but from the dead, I think I heard once a story of Phil Ivey sleeping in a public park cause he traveled to vegas and didnt lost all his money, but im not sure about this haha

I should add that I personally have never deposited even once. I traded millions of play money chips for about $50 in cash on pokerstars and never looked back. Been a pro for over 10 years now.

I know players like DNegs aren't really considered as starting at micros but from his documentary he talks about starting in small buy in games and I've seen an E60 on Phil Ivey where he discusses starting with earnings from his job at McDonalds. I know they weren't in what we call micros but they began with what most people would consider an average or below average bankroll for people at such an young age

Maratik

This is arguably the biggest story of all, we can even look at it as the 'Moneymaker' history of online poker.
In 2012 the Russian player "maratik" made history in online poker from a simple satellite.
He started his way on a satellite of 40 Frequent Player Points (FPPs) on PokerStars finished with the $ 5,200 play the wsop Main Event $ 1,000,907.26
THIS IS THE DREAM OF EVERY ONLINE PLAYER

That was 5 years ago. For you to see the russian player "maratik", since he increased your bankroll significantly after his big result, he got no more than 700 bucks in a single tournament until today in the online game. This is strange!

The dynamics of the game changed a lot?

Really but see how it can happen from someone from nothing and get a great result.
One of these days I was reading something about players who risk once or twice online these same players can become millionaires without much effort when hitting a good move.

His statement is correct, because in 5 years much has changed, of course we have people who did as Maratik, or even better, poker can often change his life, or for good, or for evil.

Most of these stories are fanciful and sponsored by online poker rooms to encourage more people to deposit and chase after a dream. If you have your bills paid you can devote 100% to poker, but when your energy bill is late, can you concentrate on the table?

Of course some stories are true, but most are from many years ago when the level of online players was relatively low, things have changed a lot since then. I think that if in 2008 I had the knowledge and experience I have today, I would have made a few hundred dollars every month at that time.

Be a little cautious in feeding this kind of dream. No more, GG and GL on your mission, on top of them! :D

Exactly! And we are with the open eyes in these various updates that have been occurring in the program in the last times.
