I should be sleeping right now because I need to wake up in 5 hours and do (most of) it again, but just had to post first.
Last night I flew into Las Vegas, checked into the Orleans, and got up early this morning to drive to Caesar's Palace for a wsop Academy class, their first ladies only version (held just before the WSOP ladies event this Sunday).
I spent the day in poker heaven. Normally I can't get through the day without a nap (or two), but even going on just five or so hours of sleep, that wasn't the case today. Our instructors were Annie Duke, Alex Outhred, Karina Jett, and Joe Navarro (the former FBI guy who specializes in non-verbal behavior). Wow, honestly, I could just listen to Annie talk poker all day long. She's fabulous. We had seminars and labs and got personalized feedback about our play and how we behave at the table.
The cherry on top of the day was a poker tournament that was a supersatellite (included in the price of the class) in which the top 10 finishers earned $1,000 entries into the WSOP ladies event this Sunday. I went in not imagining that I'd make it that far, but when we were down to about 30 people (having started with 92) and I had one of the bigger stacks in the tournament, I started to get excited and hopeful, and began to REALLY WANT one of those ten spots.
Long story short, maybe my strategy of playing really tight from there on out didn't work out so well, as I found myself as one of the two shortest stacks in the tournament after five and a half hours of play, and basically ended up calling off all my chips with AK. Booooooooooooo... I went out 12th. Major devastation. They did give me a giant and fancy men's watch as a consolation prize, though.
So, back to the original plan of doing something else with my remaining days in Vegas... such as playing some smaller tournaments and cash games, one of the Deep Stacks Extravaganza events at the Venetian, maybe seeing a show or two, going to the Pinball Hall of Fame, catching a movie at the CineVegas film festival, outlet shopping, thrift store shopping, whatever. Still, I can't help but be bummed, and wonder whether I should have just kept folding and hoped two others would be blinded out before me.
Joe Navarro told me I'm hard to read, though, which I consider a huge compliment.
More classes tomorrow, and then... time to catch up on sleep!
