I was just wondering how many people actual make a living playing poker online without being a pro, and just make around $200.00 a day?

I just started playing 3 1/2 months ago for real dough, but since then I've turned $50 into 3500 all on partypoker. Obviously I don't make a living through poker...BUT, I am an unemployed college student;) .

Id say you'd have to make about 175 a day, for 31 days, 12 months would be about 70K a year

I hope to turn into a 'full-time' player within the next 5 years. I would need to make around $1,000 per week. Until I do that consistently I will continue to work in a day-to-day job

Saying that, if you can win one $100 5-seat SnG a day, that would pretty much do the job!

No one in there right mind is going to play every day...

The average income needed for a "pro poker player" for bills, rent, etc. is said to be around $1400 a week.

Most of the players who play professionally play sit-n-gos ranging from the $50 to $1000 level as well as the several hundred dollar buy-in tournaments at the major sites.

I make money playing online poker but I am not to the level of truely being able to support myself solely playing poker. Now the amount of money that is wagered online is beyond mind boggling so living off online poker winnings can be done.

It would be nice making a living thru poker. I think that if I was good enough it would not be online. The amount of money these guys make on satellite tournys and then the wsop tournys is unbelievable. Plus if you sat on a comp. all day - after a while you become without any interaction with anyone.

Hi,

Currently i am averaging between $500-1000 a day, on a loosing day i loose $2000 and that is my limit for a single loss in one day. My best run has been $40k in a week when i won the $100k on paradise plus a few cash games. My worst week has been $8000 down. I play on average 8hrs a day 6 days a week. I am trying to save up to have a hit at the circuit in the states as i want to test myself in real live games. I play mostly 20/40 limit on paradise and the 20k and 50k MTT daily. Its hard graft but its just like any job...the hours are long but the rewards are worth it. I have been spurred on by my friend who just came back from the WSOP with $145k, he finished 65th in the main event. From my records i keep,i can see i make around $3-4k a week but that is just an average as some weeks i can win the 50k tournie which has first prize of 14k. I'm luckily enough to have my parents support,i dropped out of uni in england after 2 years( i decided it wasn't for me). They weren't too keen on the idea but gave me the chance to try it full time for 1 year which ends in september. They bankrolled me for $15k and have since re paid them in full and i am fully independent. I am still learning the game as sometimes i make the wrong call when i know i'm beat but for some reason i still call, lol. I am by no means near pro standard but to be the best you have to play the best so thats my goal of going over to the states.
Any questions welcomed.
John

Sounds like you're going great guns. I'm never going to be in same situation (haven't got bankroll and need security of regular income (kids and mortgage), but I have got a couple of questions. Firstly, do you pay tax (I see you're based in Dubai, not UK but i've wondered how poker winnings are treated. Generally gambling winnings are tax free, but I don't think this is the case if it's your sole form of income). Secondly, do you feel fulfilled not hepling anybody - I earn fraction of what you do (as Financial Advisor) but I do get some amount of satisfaction from helping people out, and wondered whether you miss daily interaction with people. (please don't take this as a criticism, just I daydream about playing poker full time, and wondered what downside was, if any).

Cheers

Hi Rob,
I do not pay tax as i have a company registered here in the tax free zone in Dubai, all it is a name and PO box. However i still think it would be tax free in the UK as my friend there is a full time pro and declares all his winnings as gambling therefore does not pay tax,i think gordon brown is pushing hard to introduce a law to stop this kinda thing.
Secondly,I would say i do help others out,on my day off i go and work for free down at the local kennels ( arabs treat most animals terrible)as i have a dog here myself and hate any cruelty to pets, i donate $1000 a month to the charity. But i do see your point, the hours are very unsocialable...i usually start playing at 10pm through til 6 am and therefore sleep during the day but fortunately i have understanding friends and i make sure i see them 2/3 times a week in the evening or afternoon. Also luckily as its summer here now (120 degrees with 90% humidity) not a lot of people are out and about and quite a few expats head back home to avoid the heat.
The stress can get pretty high too, where your playing well and getting great cards but missing everything and getting sucked out,it really builds up over 8 hrs! I make sure i hit the gym 4 times a week too because being sat a computer all day isn't exactly the best for my back. But generally i wouldn't give this up for any job at the moment. Hope this answers your questions.
