Right, there was a bit of a kicking off last week at Rileys regarding betting.

If the blinds are $200/$400. And there is no raise pre flop.

Flop comes A-K-Q

First player checks, 2nd checks, 3rd bets $600*

*Is this permittable? With the big blind $400, is a $600 opening bet valid? I always thought that it was, there was one guy however who was adament that the opening bet HAD to be $400 or $800? I argued this fact, stating that the opening bet CAN BE $600.

Clear it up for me fella's.

BF.

^^^^ Would have made for a shorter answer. :)

Limit = No, 600 would be wrong. At 200/400 blinds, the PF and flop bets must start with 400 with raises in increments fo 400. Turn and River bets and raises double to 800.

Pot Limit = Yes

No Limit = Yes

From Roberts Rules of Poker:

All raises must be equal to or greater than the size of the previous bet or raise on that betting round, except for an all-in wager. Example: Player A bets 100 and player B raises to 200. Player C wishing to raise must raise at least 100 more, making the total bet at least 3. A player who has already checked or called may not subsequently raise an all-in bet that is less than the full size of the last bet or raise. (The half-the-size rule for reopening the betting is for limit poker only.)

Sooo....if player 3 was calling the Big Blind and raising $200 (which is how I'm taking it) that is an illegal raise. If the player is calling the Big Blind and raising $600 then that is perfectly legal.

Blinds are 200/400, 3 players to flop, pot is 1200 with no antes

This is NL/PL because you have 'blinds,' in limit you have 'stakes.'
In NL, you can bet(not raise) between the size of the BB and the size of your stack. 600 is above the $400 blind, this is fine.

In Pot limit you can bet between the size of the blind and the pot. The blind is $400, the pot is $1200, $600 is between, its fine

If for some reason this is limit, NO this is not allowed, you must bet the size of the BB post flop and double the BB on the turn and river, same for a raise.

It could be a Limit tournament. Last I checked LHE tournaments have blinds which could be 200/400. Pretty sure if the OP was playing 400/800 LHE ring, they would probably already know how the betting works, no? :)
