I've never played using jokers wild but wondered if somebody can clarify if its possible to have 5 of a kind using the joker eg AAAA(Jk) and if so how does the hand sit in ranking in relation to a straight flush & royal flush?

5 of a kind ranks higher than a Royal Flush. I looked this up before at a home game when a royal and 5 of a kind occured in the same hand. The game was Queens and what follows is wild if anyone's ever heard of that.

According to a book I've got 5 of a kind beats a straight flush but loses to a royal flush.

I'm not saying that's not right, but it seems odd since a royal flush is the highest straight flush. That would be like saying a straight beats all three of a kind except trip aces. Aren't the odds of a royal flush the same as a straight flush since you need 5 cards in a row of the same suit, and the actual cards are arbitrary because a wheel straight flush and a royal flush have the same odds, just different cards? Please someone correct me if I'm wrong.

There are four possible straight flushes (i beleive) but a royal flush is only one of them so theres a 1/4 chance its a royal flush.

Its four times rarer (i think, correct me if im wrong)

Odds of getting a straight flush are 1 in 72,193.33
Odds of getting a royal flush are 1 in 649,740

Its 9 times rarer.

Check my maths I could be off the mark.

Wow I didn't know that, thanks for clarifying. So does that mean a royal beats 5 of a kind?

http://www.pagat.com/vying/pokerrank.html

Towards the bottom, it says the following:
A wild card is a particular card, often a joker, which can be used to substitute for any card the holder wishes, even a duplicate of a card the holder already has. Several cards may be designated as wild - for example all the twos. This must be agreed in advance.
The hand ranking is the same as described above, except that it is now possible to have five of a kind - five cards of the same rank - in which of course at least one will be represented by a wild card. Five of a kind is the highest combination, beating a Royal Flush.

I don't know if this is the most reliable, but this is what I found.
