I don't think him throwing a bracelet in the garbage will change anything except to make him look bad

Makes the guy look like a douche announcing it though with 9 people left. Keep it to yourself until you win. That way it will actually have more of an impact, than telling everybody now, and having a bunch of people hating on you, and rejoicing when you get knocked out.

Bad timing. At the same time if he wins I guarantee he doesn't trash it.

Disrespecting poker if he does as his arguement is with Harrahs not the game, also good advertising for his magazine by throwing his toys out of the pram :)

He should just drop out of the ME now and donate his money back to the prize pool..... Maybe next year he will work harder to get that deal with the wsop.

Wow, to steal from pro wrestling...way to go over as a heel there.

He basically just set fire to CardPlayer and SpadeClub.com by doing that. I'd be curious to see what his dad Barry has to say. I'm sure there will be exclusive interviews with them both in the October or November issue.

But true poker fans will boycot the mag and SC and they will be basically finished.

Nah, this way is definitely better. If he keeps it to himself until he wins then the story will only get out if he wins. And even then it'd be a story for a day or two absolute tops (I'm talking mainstream media here, not the poker media) and then everyone would forget about it. Even the poker media and fans will quickly move on.

But with the November Nine format he's just given the media a major reason to spend the next four months talking to him and about him. "Sure, one guy's got the chip lead, and one of them is a mulit-millionaire professional gambler, but have you heard about the guy who's gonna throw out the trophy if he wins?!? Who is he, why would he do that?!?"

Trust me, being the guy who'll throw out the trophy will make him at least as interesting to the mainstream media as Ivey or the chip leader (whose name I've forgotten already).

Of course, he gets some fans hating on him, but if what he really wants is exposure for his beef with Harrahs this is probably as good a way as any to go about getting it. Especially since if Ivey sticks to form he'll probably spend the next four months avoiding the media.

EDIT: missed this bit of the story first time around:

And if you're the Editor of one of the two major poker publications, isn't one of your goals to bring more people to the game?

Maybe it's one of your goals. But I promise you it's a looooooooong way behind your major goal, which is selling magazines by the truckload. A stunt like should work very nicely towards the latter goal BTW, thank you so very much.

Might even secure CardPlayer a top media spot in next years WSOP.... Play the guilt trip card on Harrahs...

Now I'm not too sure. Here are some additional quotes from him that ESPN had on their poker section:

Jeff Shulman -- No player at this final table will inspire more debate than Shulman, the editor of Card Player magazine. Shulman has stirred controversy with his claim that he will throw the bracelet in the garbage if he wins it. "It has nothing to do with [Card Player no longer having exclusive rights to WSOP coverage]," the 34-year-old Las Vegas native said. "It's about my lack of respect for the WSOP and the management here and what they've done to the players. That said, I still wouldn't wear it if I was best friends with them. When I had a chance to win years ago, I said I wouldn't wear it. I'm shocked that people wear those ugly things."
"Jeff generally says and does what he means, so if he says something, I don't doubt he's going to do it," best friend Adam Schoenfeld said. "I just see this as a professional wrestling heel turn ,and Jeff's just gonna be the bad guy, so it doesn't hurt anyone."
"If I win, I'll never play at the Rio or WSOP again," Shulman said. "If I win, I'll never play poker again."

====================
So his friend kind of validated what I said earlier. I find it funny though that he says he'll never play at the Rio/WSOP/Poker ever again if he wins. So he will if he doesn't win?

Yeah, "Happy" is the perfect nickname for this guy.

+1

I'd like to see him win, just to see how long it takes before he shows up for an event or logs in online to play some cards......
And it makes no sence.... play again if I don't win, but won't play if I do.... YOUR STUPID JEFF!

Remember, it's not about poker, it's about Shulman. Guess Phil Helmuth isn't the only one.

He certainly has a point, it's total bs to give exclusive rights instead of allowing access to all reputable media. Maybe I am misguided, but I thought the whole idea was to do what was in the best interest of the game and its players. On that same note, Shulman has brought this to the attention of the media but at the same time he is disrespecting poker. If he truly wanted to do what was in the best interest of the game and its players he wouldn't throw it in the trash or claim he will never play again if he wins. Talking about how ugly he thinks the bracelet is really going over the top, it would be one thing if he had an idea for a new design and discussed that but the way it is worded just him being a rebeling disrepectful jerk.

I'd rather see him donate the bracelet or the money it could bring in and bring to the attention of the national media what he believes would benefit the game and the players. Right now he just sounds like a selfish douche or a little kid having a temper tantrum because life isn't fair and he didn't get his way.
