How many people actually think he will get far in another big tournament? Do you think he actually won from skill or mainly luck?

Personally I think he had a few lucky days, he played any hand and sucked out so many times. I don't think he'll be winning any big tournies and I was just talking to someone about that and wanted to see how others feel about it.

I don't think he'll go very far.

Assuming the ESPN broadcast didn't just make it look that way, he got ridiculously lucky.

If you watch the episodes he won almost every single hand they showed him in, and he always had the nuts/or the near nuts)

I watched it, I've watched the entire tournament 3 times now I think :p

Like I said, I think he won based on luck more than skill. He did talk a lot of people into hands / out of hands though

yes he will go far in another tourney some time, the reason is he has the buy in to buy in multi times in many tourneys so he is bound to go deep some time. Now he will be no hachem or raymer and go deep time and time again but sure if you had 6 mil (if he had to give 1/2 away) you would go deep also.

Don't forget about the 10% to Johnny Chan and taxes.

So really

12 mil - 20% ish? (I don't know how they tax winnings like that, but probably around there)=9.6 mil

9.6 mil/2=4.8 mil

4.8 mil-10%= $4.32 mil

I could swear he had another debt as well..

he owed half to that one guy, but either way he will go deep eventually again. Remember also he has a good job.

I accounted for the half as well, that's what the 9.6 mil/2 is lol

He's got a hell of a trainer though, you gotta admit that. Either way, I'd rather have him at my table than any other champion.

As Chan himself said, Jamie's game is designed for a tournament like the Main Event (80% VP$IP and a lot of luck in a large field of players = big enough chipstack to donk out the good players). Thus, it is certainly very possible that he'll go far in another, similar event. However, he's just not as good without 123123128714289 chips in front of him, and that probably won't happen very often.

You'd rather play him than MoneyFaker?

I haven't watched the 2003 world series, so I don't know exactly how he plays, only seen a few hands, and haven't heard his name anywhere except seeing his face at the bottom of the pokerstars open page.

Gold just gives himself away, and people took him too seriously, and couldn't see through him. I personally think he would've fallen flat on his face had he not been shipping loads of cash to lady luck.

Did anyone see his rather lackluster performance on Poker after Dark recently? On a single table with solid oppenents, he had a pretty hard time.

Also, lol at the guy in the old guy in the recently aired WPT who said on camera that the reason he made the final table was that JG was at his earlier table, played terrible, and gave his chips away...

Good players repeat WSOP wins like Phil Hellmuth, Johnny Chan, Doyle Brunson and Stu Unger to name a few. Some just get lucky like Chris Moneymaker. To quote a line from Star Wars Episode (I forget), his "overconfidence will be his downfall." I do think Joe Hachem and Greg Raymer will go far though.

Jamie Gold is not a poor player, but he is not a top player either. After having seen him play, he is probably good enough to have a positive expectation in any tournament he enters, but I wouldn't stake him for a cash game higher than 5/10NL live or 1/2NL online.

I would say his main event win was 50% luck - 30% skill - 20% BS. I don't see him going deep in the main event again unless he is able to keep his luck level at 50%. I think Hachem and Raymer deserved the win a little more than Gold did. I also think you will see Hachem or Raymer at another main event final table before you will see Gold.

The biggest problem jamie the clown gold will have is the way he holds himself. People don't like him and the arrogance in which he talks to people. People will be gunning for him. I would also like to suggest that he keeps that bowl of cereal or what ever it is he is eating away from the table. I cant stand watching him play, talk or eat..
But in general he was able to see a lot of flops towards the end because of the stack he had. If you could play every hand to at least see the flop you would do well also.
He has just rubbed many people the wrong way and chances are good lots of those young rich kids will be willing to risk their trust funds to take him down on the slick.

He never should have been allowed to talk about hands the way he did while he was in them. Not to mention when he tried to tip off his friend to not call (the "top-top" incident) during a hand late in the ME. The friend busted out on the hand, which had Jamie upset.

He was a tremendous luckbox to keep hitting cards on the flop and turn. However, he did seem to sense when he was beat and bailed out of hands without damaging his stack of chips too much.

You must admit -- he certainly showed one way to play the large stack and destroy opponents.

Well luck certainly had a huge role, but I think its true, as was said, he played some of those hands pretty decently. Because of his stack even if he doesn't hit the board he still might of outplayed those guys. You really can't tell. Where his luck really showed is when monies were all-in PF and he always seemed to win those coin-flips and hands where he was an even worse dog. I remember him busting a pro with 87o vs A3, all-in PF, and catching a 654 flop.

When it got to the final table, that's where luck really played a huge role for him. He busted 2 players being dealt QQ while they were dealt JJ, money all-in PF. He busted the first guy with 22 vs AK, flopping a set. If I remember correctly, he busted Allen Cunningham winning a race with KJ vs TT. Down to 3 handed, he moves all-in on an open-ended straight draw and catches vs TP/TK, as a 2 to 1 dog (this hand could have made the difference if Wasika makes the call with his open ended straight flush draw). I think overall he played decently, but when monies were in he really caught some huge breaks, in absence of which he could end up 3rd or even 4th. Leave alone Cunningham, I think even Erik Friberg is better than him. Friberg just had the bad luck of being dealt JJ while Gold had QQ.

Is Gold going to ever make it deep again? I don't see why not, maybe this year or sometime in the next 10, I think its always possible. The guy may not be the greatest, but he's not exactly a donk, and if lady luck smiles to him again, well sure, he can make it deep and even to another FT in the future. I wouldn't be surprised because I think his game is at the level where if he catches some breaks here and there, like last year, it won't be too hard for him. Of course, the same can be said for many other players.

Friberg deserves a lot of respect. I think that had he not been dealt JJ against QQ that one time, he would have probably ended up winning it.

Man, it's sentences like that that make you realize how much luck it takes to not get something like that in the how many hundred/thousand hands you play in the world series?
