is it possible to win consistently at micro MTTs?

I stick with cash mostly. The only MTTs I play are the CC freerolls and to play in the $1 ones I can enter with points.

The blinds climb so fast and players just play so loose.

I just had one where I tripled up with KK vs. 65 and QJ. But soon after I had A9 lose to A3. I went in with top pair ace kicker, he went in with a flush draw on the flop. Had him 2:1 when the chips went in, but he hit the flush.

Then as I was down to 6 BBs soon after that, I open shoved with Q9 in late position and got called by BB's T8. I lose.

Neither loss was so bad as I was 2:1 at best, but if few people ever fold, even AA in a multiway pot is very vulnerable. So if you are "unlucky" for a particular day, you're pretty much screwed.

How could anyone ever sustain a good ROI at these micro levels?

It's possible. I found that it took me a lot of patience to get over the garbage, but I managed to keep a 85% ROI over the course of my last 115 MTT's. All were between $1 and $25. Sounds impressive until I see that it averaged out to only $2.16/h played... That tells me that I missed the money often, but when I cashed it was deep. SO I guess I did something right there..

TBH, I rarely play MTT anymore. Been focusing on SNG lately and have been holding even at that.

Patience and volume are key.

Where's PO? He'd know the right thing to say about all this.

It's possible but you have to get through the variance and take out the fish! I think being really aggressive with big hands is key to winning in micro stakes since they will call off their money with lesser hands.

For anyone with decent skills, it's certainly possible to maintain a good ROI. It does take a couple of things. One is a sample size large enough to balance out the variance that's natural in MTTs. Another is to remember that looking at what happened in single tournaments is taking a far too micro view. A third - and there are more - is that when you get the chance to go deep, don't tighten up just to cash and/or to inch up the pay scale. It's more profitable to cash somewhat less often provided you place higher on average when you do place. One win or high placing is worth a lot of times just squeezing into the money.

With almost no fold equity, I find it very difficult to win since you are bound to lose some 60:40 showdowns (not to mention those AA vs. 67 suited kinds). Blind stealing is all but impossible since there are usually at least 2 limpers by the time action gets to you in late position. And if you raise you are still bound to get called by lots of crap, so you have to be raising with a legit hand.

You would be shocked how much they tighten up on the bubble and after the first pay hike, especially final tables. I think that once you are ITM the play usually gets way more passive and and tighter so you can just open up much wider and fold to any resistance (cause they are usually too scared to play back at you other than to call and hope they smash a flop)

It is hard but certainly sustainable. You just have to remember that we don't really care about min cashes. Sometimes I tighten up on the bubble when I'm just scraping into the money and a triple up will barely see me climb up the rankings. When blind structures are pretty brutal I just accept as many flips as I can and look to get a stack that can absorb losses.
