Hope this is the right forum to put this question. Is it legal for someone under 18 to play freerolls and already build a bankroll for when you turn 18? And if you then fill in your details, will the game (pokerstars I'm talking about here) acknowledge you won the money underaged? Oh and if it isn't legal, I'm asking this for a friend. Obviously.

To signup you would have to give your date of birth. So you would have to lie about your age at the start. And then when you confirm your identity it wouldn't match

You can actually play freerolls without giving out your details. You just can't add your winnings to your account.

I think that before 18 years of age are generally prohibited from gambling on the money and freerolls include cash to the game

But technically you aren't doing a transaction, so it isn't prohibited?

You can play the freeroll, but your winnings you can not fix in his hand. For this purpose it is necessary to specify the day and year of birth. If the deceive then you will not change your data in the future. In short you will win, but the money had not brought forth.

One of the most successful pros is "Timex", Mike McDonald. He's been playing online since he was 15 years old.

Old article from:
https://www.pokertube.com/speciality/pro/mike-timex-mcdonald
Member of the young guard, Mike McDonald was born on September 11, 1989 in canada.
,........
......During all this time, he was very active in the online poker community and his nickname Timex is actually his 2+2 forum alias. Some of the people who supported him and helped his game progress were aware that he was underage but mix of great talent and good run more than made up for the fact. When he finally reached the legal age for playing, he has quickly become known amongst the other regulars in the game for his “death stare”.

His overall winnings amount to nearly $10,000,000 and he is currently ranked number one on the Player of the Year list.

He posts at 2+2..

If you win something, you can collect it by filling in your details. If you don't, the winnings keep pending in your account, to be collected when details are filled in. So it seems like you are allowed to play underaged, but you can't cash yet. Question is: can you collect the money when you turn 18 without the game acknowledging it was won while underaged?

Don't try to fade the law on this one. Just practice legally until you are of age consequences of playing around could cost you the chance to ever play again at the site that catch's you and potentially other legal issues.

Found this from 2011:
PokerStars confiscates $500k from underaged player

A peculiar case has emerged in the wake of Sunday's record-breaking Sunday Million tournament. 6th place finisher "zeurrr" was found to be underage and has now had his $500,000 prize money confiscated.

Sunday's fifth anniversary Sunday Million tournament on PokerStars will go down in history as one of the biggest online events ever to be played with nearly 60,000 runners and a massive $12 million prize pool.

The tournament eventually was won by "Bdbeatslayer", who took home a Lamborghini Gallardo and $671,093 after a nine-way deal was struck on the final table.

Also getting a piece of the deal was "zeurrr", who ended up cashing $518,402, but a peculiar case is now unfolding in the wake of the historic tournament, leaving "zeurrr" completely empty-handed.

The instance occurred as a Dutch newspaper tried to phone up "zeurrr" - whose account was registered from the netherlands - only to get in contact with the player's father.

The father then claimed that it was him, not his son, who had won the money, and this lead the newspaper to investigate the case further.

It finally turned out that the father was indeed covering for his son by claiming he was the winner, as the son himself was only 17 and as such not legally allowed to play on PokerStars.

PokerStars initiated an investigation of the circumstances, and today is was confirmed by a Dutch representative from the site that the prize money has been confiscated as "zeurrr" was not old enough to play in the first place.

The odd case has since spurred wild debates on 2+2 with among others Tom "durrrr" Dwan defending the young winner, arguing that underaged players do not hold any significant edge over their opponents, and that they should therefore be allowed to play.

PokerStars nonetheless seems decided in the case, and it is now speculated that the confiscated prize money will be distributed among the rest of the tournament winners.

Minor are under ....

The main point is that normal High school graduation age is 18. Under 18 you should be under the guidance of parents and studying.
Nothing god will come out of a too young person investing time in Poker or baccarat, roulette, etc. :deal:

Wow, pretty harsh in a way. Different story though - as the Sunday Million is not quite a freeroll, and there must've been a deposit on this particular account. The fact you can actually play a freeroll without filling in your details, but you have to to collect winnings inclines me to think you can actually play freerolls underaged legally. But that could just be me. And my wishful thinking.

You're telling me you studied 24/7 when you were under 18? And I've heard enough stories of pro players that started off young. Many did. Difference between 16/17 and 18 isn't huge.

Age verification

Any underage player who has provided dishonest or inaccurate information regarding their true age may have all winnings forfeited and could face criminal prosecution.

What we do

  • Every person signing up for a new account must check a box that indicates that they are at least 18 years of age. This notifies everybody that we don’t accept players under 18.
  • When a player creates an account with us, we collect their name, address, and birth date to confirm that the player is at least 18 years old.
  • We do not target underage players with our marketing and advertising. It is neither good business nor consistent with our personal and corporate values to attract underage players.

In the eyes of society, and the laws they pass, the difference between 16/17 and 18 is enormous. Life altering differences. A crime by a 17 years old might get a much lighter sentence than that same crime committed by that same kid done 1 year later.

For under 18's, everything you are learning about life should be considered and treated as an apprenticeship.

As for the legalities you wonder about. At some point you may want to withdraw, and you will have to have your details filled out. A site like Stars will have your entire playing history at it's finger tips. If you want to continue playing online poker, you will need to be very upfront about who and what you are.

There are global implications for any online poker provider that override your petty lies. Guess who wins in any disagreement? Not the lying kid who every time he logged in, lied to the site saying he was of legal age.

So, this underage, lying kid thinks he wants to get paid for that?

Ban the punk!

Alright, clear. I don't entirely remember my registration - it was some time ago and it was just to play a play money game with a friend. So I didn't really pay attention while going through the registration, as I didn't think it could do any harm. A bit later I got more into it. But I have never given out my name, address or birth date. So that part isn't true, or must've changed since they wrote this.

I completely agree. It wasn't the point I was trying to make. He said that "nothing good will come out of a too young person investing time in poker", I disproved that by saying there have come good things out of it. And it's not like you become a completely different person the day you turn 18. The whole law thing - of course, I agree. One of the flaws in the law; a difference of one birthday changes you from an inferior mutt to a grown man.

Now it isn't entirely true that this kid is lying every single time he logs in, as you can play without filling in your details. That's why I was curious.
