Was playing $1 and $2 NL at a poker room when I ran into an interesting spot. I was able to limp in from the BB with 7s8c with 3 players behind me in the hand. Flop comes out Qd 7d 8s. I open for $12 with my 2 pair and get one caller (the player in the seat left of me). The turn is a 2d (not a great card but I didnt think he was on the diamond draw). Assuming I was still ahead I bet 20. He then, without any hesitation, shoves all his chips in. He had slightly over 60 after matching my 20. Well I now think I misread him. All I could figure now was he hit a small flush and was forcing me out of the hand for fear of a 4th diamond on the river. Was getting roughly 1to1 on a call and figured I only had 6 outs....I cant call....after thinking for about 30 or so seconds I was about to flick my hand in the muck when he flashes me the Ad and tells me to fold.............Why would you flash the Ad? Why would you want someone to fold when you have the nuts? I do not give the player enough credit to goat me in like that and I now think he does not have a flush. So at best he has a pair with the nut draw. There is no way I can fold now.
So I end up calling and sure enough he has the nut draw with no other pair or draw. River blanks and I scoop the pot....horray! Its funny how I was a split second away from folding and a quick flash earns me a ~200 dollar pot. Hope this was interesting to someone besides me. =D

You know, your thought process could have gone either way honestly. Sometimes, when I am playing live poker, and I start chatting up one of the guys, they are usually pretty friendly and try to save you some money if they know they are already going to win a large pot. In some situations, I have had the same thing happen to me, but the player shows me just as a friendly gesture that I should fold. It worked out for you this time, because I believe this wasn't the case in this hand, but you have to be careful. Sometimes, people will try to use reverse psychology as well.

I've never played live poker before. Is this legal and considered OK to do in a casino or major event?

Yes, I had considered that he could be trying to get me to call by showing me Ad....but he would have to be quite clever in thinking I would break it down the way I did and get me to call a nut flush. And frankly, I did not find him to be capable of thinking this way.....And him trying to save me money was not a factor as we played at each other quite a bit over the last hour and I was already holding some of his chips.

This was not in a casino...it was a poker room of questionable legality. Think.....Rounders, but not as shady.

OP,

To me, the guy was really not smart to shove all-in on a river diamond draw. First, I don't know what he was chasing calling your 12 dollar c-bet. Second, its only about a ~17% chance that he will make his flush. Mathematically, you were right to call, whether or not he showed you the Ad.

At my local casino, they have a rule that if you are going to flash cards to players, the whole table has to see. And, you cannot show until the hand is over. I would never reveal my cards to anyone until a hand is over, and only if I chose to.

Dumb move on his part. Congradulations on the win.
