I can't believe no one has mentioned Viktor Blom. Although he goes through the craziest multi million dollar swings and plays way to long sessions and tilts bad from time to time but every game he has learned he has learned through intuition and playing the best in the world.

He now struggles to get action at the nosebleeds and has been playing them since around 2007 or so. Yes he is a bad degen and does not know when to stop when having a bad session but imo he is one of the current best all around cash game players in the world.

I think he is the only player who plays nosebleeds who will not deny anyone action.

There is no doubt that Viktor is a great player. But I think It's a pretty big stretch to list him as the greatest player ever....There are a lot of other players that deserve that distinction ahead of Viktor. But I respect your opinion.

Totally agree with you mate as he is not the greatest player of all time.

My comment was more directed at this present time.

As for greatest player ever it is a hard one, me personally would not put Daniel Negreanu up there like a lot of people have said.

It is a hard question as there are different players from different times who all deserve a listing. Like Phil Ivey, Stu Ungar, Chip Reese etc.

That would be a line up I would of loved to see a high stakes NLHE ring game with Phil Ivey, Stu Ungar, Chip Reese, Viktor Blom, Doyler Brunson. (All action players from different eras)

For me though if I had to pick one person I would have to pick Phil Ivey, as although he is struggling to keep up with the PLO/NLHE nosebleed specialists these days he can still hold his own at pretty much any variation against any opponent. Not to mention he is also a real good tournament player.

If anyone doesn't know much about Stu Ungar I strongly recommend watching 'One of a Kind' A bookmakers son from New York who had literally been gambling everyday from 10 or so year old. It is a real good documentary but a sad one also. You can watch it free on youtube.

Totally fair. Like I said, I completely respect your opinion and there's no denying Viktor is a great player, and who knows, one day he may very well be in the conversation.

And regarding Stu, you should check out High Roller: The Stu Ungar Story, if you haven't seen it already. It stars Michael Impirioli from The Sopranos and he does a great job playing Stu, in my opinion.

Agreed. At least on tv cash games. He makes stupid calls just to show he is the boss and gets destroyed. He also makes horrible folds like an overpair after getting three barreled.

He makes stupid calls, because he can't let go of his pocket pair, when there's clearly a bigger draw on the table. However, his ego clouds his judgement at times, and moans like a little micro-stakes loser, after he busts out.

Every player that can live by playing poker is the best player i think.Everyone can make incredible moves, everyone can play best poker and make good decisions, everyone that loves poker and is living by it...
Poker is dynamic game...You cant judge only by the winings....

I read the book this documentary is based on a while back. It is a terrific biography.

Cheers!

The greatest poker player of all time is Daniel Negreanu, no question, but I hope that I will take his place in the future. :)

Who is the greatest poker player of all time?
None of the famous TV stars of today, if we consider the greatest player of all time, how come people just mention the ones they know? we need to analyze all the great poker players of the XX Century. :deal:

That's why the topic title say "IN YOUR OPINION". Everyone has an opinion, and that's what I'm asking for. Obviously it's subjective.

I'm still kinda surprised at how many people are picking Daniel. Obviously he's an incredible player, and he's definitely one of my all time favorites. Just surprised at how many people pick him as GOAT.

Best players based on type

it depends what type of game is played
Cash Games:
1. Tom "durrr" Dwan
2. Phil Ivey
3. Doyle B
4. Daniel N
5. Patrick A
6. Phil H
7. Antonio E
8.Eric S

Tourney:
1. Stu U
2. Phil H
3. Daniel N
4. Johnny C
5. Doyle
6. Antonio E

If i had to say the best all around it would be Daniel, but Tom Dwan is unreal with live and online no limit high stakes cash games

Its ridiculous question. As media person - Negreanu. As skilled player - there are many top-regs in different disciplines.

It is vary what are you observing. Some will say it is Stu Ungar, some will say the best is Chip Reese, or Phil Ivey or Daniel Negreanu
Dont forget Doyle
And who is the best, while some of them play(ed) cash and some prefer(ed) tournaments
and all together, they are all legends
At last, for me it is Stu

IN YOUR OPINION who is the greatest poker player of all time?

I definitely have trouble finding fault with either of these poker players. Phil Ivey, who I have met and seems to be a decent fellow, is THE GREATEST. But I love Daniel Negraneu. Most interesting to watch play.

I don't know about greatest

But phil helmouth has always been my favorite. I liked him so much that I played on the ultimate bet site just because of him. He was a good player and his aditude entertained me. He get so mad, call others out, and wasn't really PG. I always admired nuygrnu abilities though he's extremely smart and quick on the number's.
