Hi guys,

Names Ash I'm a UK based player I've been on the poker circuit around 5 years now I'm a profitable live player at both 100 and 200 NL casino I'm also up in live tournaments, online I haven't been fortunate enough to take down a big prize as of yet I have the playing ability to mix at a respectable level ,however tend to stay away from big sites (stars) endless options and stakes because ''this is part of the problem'' my temptation steers me to take big risks and chase a tilt maybe even go a little mad. (short temperament )
I can be like 'zen' for weeks on end and then be like charlie sheen for a days on end.

Basically I'm destroying my profits and wasting all my hard work. I will play roulette i will bank my return then blow the rest!
The most painful thing is I can play some mesmerising poker, Solid results playing as a tag and as a lag Some nights I have flawless games where decisions have been so precise and I could tell you every single player at my tables strategy, weaknesses and strengths withing 5-7 hours of meeting them in person.

Basically I am struggling I love the game absolutely love the game I know I have some raw talent there far the finished article but with the right focus and the right work ethic I can contribute to my life financially with this beautiful game.
Ive got better with control but i still occasionally steer to the dark side!

So in a nut shell.
Stay or quit?
:-/

The answer is in your question. you named all your bad attributes that you would need to change if you decide to continue playing poker and start out with small deposits and work your way up.

Growth in poker is primarily based on discipline. There are a lot of aspects of the game, but most (if not all) come down to discipline on some level. The discipline to lay down a hand, to avoid tilt, to trust your reads, to stay focused, etc. You have to learn from your mistakes and use that experience as a form of growth and a way to develop your skills. As Dawn said, the answer is in your own post. You recognize areas that can be improved - the hard part is developing the discipline to act on it.

OH, and dont be afraid to use periods in your sentences, makes it easier to follow :)

Thanks well I think that isolates a focus I may take time out from playing and just study and develop the mental and emotional aspects both in life and poker

Hi cotta777. I think studying is great, but there is nothing like hands on to help you with your game, so keep playing while you study. And like what's already been said, if you know what the problem is, you are ahead of the game. One thing I've started doing is to go against what I think I know and try some other things that I've been told here. It works too. GL

You should absolutely stick with poker as it seems by your introduction that you're a solid and profitable player. As others have said, you've highlighted your weak areas and these are what need to be worked on. I believe you need to employ a stricter bankroll management approach, you say your 'tempted' to take big risks- why is this? Poker is not a race, you don't need to rush, you just need to be patient and disciplined and the results will come. Hope this helps.

Tough to really give good advice here. I don't want to tell you to keep playing and work on your mental game if you actually have a gambling problem, but I also don't want to tell you to quit playing if you don't have a problem.

Just be honest with yourself. Are you spewing your profits on or off the table because you "need" to or can't control it, or are you just playing poorly when you run bad because you get emotional? Nobody here can really answer for you.

Like an other guy said, you listed your faults. Try beginning fixing these issues, and keep the poker hard work of studying and identifying your mistakes, especially online.

Don't give up.

Dark side

Phone Gambler's Anonymous and ask them if it would be OK for you to come to a meeting and just listen from a dark corner. After a couple of hours of listening to their stomach-churning stories I guarantee you will know a lot more about the power of compulsive gambling than you do now. If you are truly powerless over gambling, you are in a heap of trouble - it's just as bad as being a junkie or a crack-head.

Personally, I don't see poker as being in the same category as roulette, blackjack, and slot machines, but every now and then I'll catch myself going all-in when I shouldn't have, and I know that I've just given into the "dark side" for a moment, and I give my head a good shake. The rest of the time, I don't really see poker as "gambling". Personally, I think they should teach poker to kids in school. I wish I'd known all this stuff when I was on the way up...

This is my first post. Apologies in advance if I screw it up...:)

Don't risk more than you can afford to lose, and don't go nuts when you win. I was in a casino once and saw a guy when about $400 on a slot machine. He was high-fiving all his friends and going nuts. Then he cashed out, went to the roulette table and bet $400 on red. It was black, and just like that, all his money was gone.

One of the hardest things to learn about poker is when to quit playing at a particular session. I have seen guys buy-in on tables 4-5 times in one setting and just keep losing, and I have seen guys amass huge piles of chips and keep playing and eventually lose a lot or even all of their chips. In other words, it's all about discipline.
