At the beginning of a poker career, I have learned to play at tables with no money. For a long time it played. I had 20 million chips. At that time it was a ceiling on the РS. Now it does not interest me.
Why not if this is any exotic game, like badugi or ruzz. In real money game you will be beaten at once by professionals in that discipline, but in "play" you may learn without big losses.

But what exactly are you 'learning'? (aside from the most basic of fundamentals). When there's nothing at stake, typically the game is sooooo much different than a 'real' game it is hardly a training ground for money games.
I would simply because I love the game of poker, for me real money is more fun to me because I get to do more thinking. Also why playing play money I can decision I may not if it was real money. Plus I get to play higher stakes in play money lol
I have 6 years of playing for play chips just because I like to play poker !!! If only not advertising pokerstars to play on for conventional chips))))
Currently play poker at hotels ( few casinos in NZ) where we have minimal entry costs and small prizes only. Over a period qualify for the area finals where the sponsors put up reasonable prizes, and little or no cost to enter.
So basically the weekly game is for no cash if you want, but we still have plenty come along for a night out and a few drinks with friends.
I would still play poker with play money if I couldn't play for real money . The game entertains me a lot , whether there is a prize or not it's still funny and I have a great time . Ofcourse if it's real it's better and more interesting
Yes, I play on the chips ...
But the tactics and strategy of the game on the chips is different from playing for money - a lot of headless and "ALL-IN'ers" into play for fun
I wouldn't play. I don't play only for the money, I like too much the game, but poker with "play money" is impossible, everyone calls everything, everyone is very brave, it end to our chances of bluffing, the game loses emotion.
When I started playing poker only, then I played on conventional chips, because there was not enough experience and play for real money was terrible. But the excitement takes its)))), and start playing for real money. Absolutely different sensations, the game for real money is of great interest and courage.
I hate play money games because it gives you false hope on just how well you play when you go into a real cash game. Those games are full of all in "Bingo Players" who are simply on to waste time. To me its just too darn discouraging to your mental because of multi calls and of course it leads to a suck out paradise. Best of luck at the tables!!
Poker is meant to be played with money imo. It just doesn't seem to work without money being involved in some way. I could maybe still continue to play it as a esport, but I would prefer to play with cash.
Poker without real money is just meaningless. When you fall behind in a "for fun" game, the best strategy becomes to make high risk yet high reward choices. Essentially, if you are sitting in last place, you've got nothing to lose so you might as well risk it all for a shot at the top. In real life poker, you are always in a situation where you have something to lose: your money.
