I figured I'd air this idea out here, basically because I'm bored. Quite some time ago I had an idea for a sort of poker video game, but nothing like Hoyle's Card Games or Poker Night at the Inventory. No, this would be a full-on poker RPG with a full RPG system. How the heck would something like that be done? Well let's just say in this version of "poker" the odds calculations would be a lot less clear-cut. There would be statistics like Fortitude (the higher the number, the harder it is for the character to go on tilt. "On Tilt" being a status ailment in which there is a certain percentage chance of the character not following your directions. Others would be Aggression--how easy the character's bets can get the others at the table afraid of him/her, Intelligence (know when to fold 'em and also interaction with the in-game percentages) and of course, Luck.

There would also be special powers that each could be activated a set number of times per tournament. An example would be "One Time" a power that can only be activated one time per tournament and would raise the chance of an out hitting (in the context of the video game algorithms and such) by a percentage dependent on the Luck stat. I see a lot of potential here, but what do you guys think? Too weird? Awesome? Something I haven't thought of?

There's a lot that you haven't thought of or at least stated, obviously, but it's a great idea, imo. I feel like you'd be best served creating a downloadable mobile App for this idea.

Never really got into RPG. Sounds interesting enough though. Looking forward to seeing what direction this heads. I'm sure there are a bunch of RPG players here that could give some input. Best of luck if you really decide to get something like this out there.

I say set it back in the day. Some of the stories you read from Doyle Brunson, driving around Texas from game to game, potentially getting robbed on the road, or walking into fixed games.

Bit of sports betting on the side, plus some weird games random people approach you with between your regular games, where you need to figure out if youre getting the right odds to give it a go or if youre being suckered. One story ive read comes to mind where a whale approached Doyle and a mate, 5 card draw, paying 2 to 1, where if the whale didnt like his hand hed have the opportunity to throw it away and play a new hand. Youd have to try and figure the odds, plus the general poor/good play of the opponent that youve gained info from your travels on the harsh Texas circuit. You know, stuff like that.

Make it like FIFA, you can "generate" a game youve arrived at, or play it all, or maybe even just do a half generate half play style.

RPG elements come into play when youre being robbed too, you can buy a gun on the way to defend yourself, or pay some rake from the game for security. Along the 'getting robbed' lines you can elect to hide some of your role in your shoe, however a random generator within the game activates every so often, and depending on the generator you lose a % or all of your stack from keeping it in your shoe.

Sorry Ive blabbed a bit, I like this concept, have a million more ideas rolling around in my head

Hey, there are a LOT of good ideas here! As for the setting, I was thinking it wouldn't really be an "Earth" setting, more something blatantly unrealistic. Like say, a world where maybe even whole NATIONS can rise and fall at the whim of the cards. But yeah, adding random events is an excellent idea and there are several good ideas for what those events could be. I can PM you to talk about this more if you want--especially if you could or know anybody who could potentially help make this a reality.

It's a good idea for beginners, then at a certain point (when you're profitable), you just can't compete with cash games. So I would target newer players and learners.. Hand chart in game, etc... :)

Edit: Also, there is a game like this called governor of poker (1 & 2). It helped me learn, perhaps you can draw "insight" from these games as well ;)

I don't think it would work because I am sure people would much rather play actual poker online rather than control a character to play poker for them. Idk this just sounds silly to me. It would be like playing an rpg game where the theme is your life. Which is cool and all but it would make sense for people to much rather put in the energy into their actual lives or poker chops. The only way i can see poker in a video game is as a side game where its a way for the character to make extra $$$ to buy a weapon or something. I think they did that in one of the GTAs
