Okay so a week or two ago I was at a casino for the first time with my brother, planning to play a 220€ tournament. Now I'm not a rich guy nor do I have even close of a bankroll to play in something like that, but my brother was staking so what the hell, bring on the freeroll. I hadn't pre-registered for it, so I was stuck with playing when late registration began. My brother was already playing while I hadn't given the money yet, so I was just watching the tables, how people played and admiring the poker room and the cocktail waitresses (I'm a live poker n00b). Other people were watching the tourney alongside me, eager to play yet with no money on the pocket.

So on the first level, while I'm watching the closest table, a wealthy english guy comes in the room. The guy walks to the person to my exact left and asks him "Do you play poker?". The other person told him "Nah, I'm just watching" and I thought the english guy was just gonna ask him the rules of the game or something newbish along those lines, so I ignore the conversation. The man then proceeds to the guy two to my left and asks him the same "Do you play poker?" to which the new guy says "Yes I do, but I'm not playing in this tournament". Then, the rich guy reaches for his pocket, grabs a tourney ticket and hands it to him saying "Here you go". He then walks off to the tables while the lucky guy gets a sudden happy look on his face, runs to the lobby and gets his chips, then sitting down at his table. I'm standing with a WTF look on my face, thinking why the hell didn't I engage in conversation with the english guy... 220€ translates to like 350$, and someone just hands that to a stranger? Oh well, my brother was still paying me in, so it was still a freeroll for me. I sat at a table in like the 3rd or 4th level and busted a few hours later... so let that be a lesson to all, when a rich guy asks someone next to you if you play poker, jump in the middle and say you do.

It was in portugal. Lots of english people are on vacation on the south coast here at this time of the year, so I guess he was just one of many.

Was probably a cash money player who didnt want to get up from a profitable session. Ive been in spots when I wanted to play a tournament but didnt due to liking a table I was at, never gave away a seat yet though.

If I knew that was you I would have given you the ticket, sorry.

Just kiddin' ya. As usual it's always the other guy who gets lucky. Then again, like you said, your brother was footing the bill this time so it wasn't all that bad. Except for your brother maybe.:p

That would be my luck also! But my luck would also have it that the guy who was given the free ticket would win the tourney.

I was at an end of the year dirt track race and bought three raffle tickets with a five dollar bill. The lady next to me bought 1 ticket. At the end of the night they drew the raffle and she won ten thousand dollars! I lost a lot of sleep over that one.
