So the other day im playing $1/$2 live at a full table with and older woman and an older man across the table.. I raise PF from the cutoff with a9s the woman reraises my continuation bet on the flop and i float with the nut flush draw and hit on the turn.. i hit my flush and won a decent pot when she folded on the river...

After the hand the two were discussing what i had and talking a lot so i said No i had the Ace high flush.... After that the woman got extremely annoyed with me and raised her voice saying "well i had a set of kings you wanna talk hands.. i had this i had that" and the two continued to talk about how rude i was and all this.. and referred to me as "raybans" for the next hour or so because i was wearing sunglasses LOL

What im wondering is if i you think i was being rude i thought it was a nice thing to do to tell her what my hand was to let her know she made a good fold.. they eventually left because the older gentleman said "i cant handle raybans anymore" even tho i was completely quiet the whole time

If you want folks to think your nice, go volunteer at a soup kitchen or somesuch. Poker is a game of incomplete information, why would you feel the need to provide information to your opponents & why do you consider it nice to provide such when thy have no way of knowing if your telling the truth or not. Take the money & enjoy them deluding themselves as to your skill level.

I don't think you did anything rude by any means.

That said, if you're going to play poker live, I think there's a level of aggression - and perhaps rudeness - that can be beneficial to a game. I'm not implying for anyone to be a racist or hatred, but playing with a certain level of aggression can be a great way to control the table and put others on tilt.

A light hearted, poking of fun at another player - even a stranger - is usually beneficial to your game. Be forewarned, they'll probably do the same back, but if you can put it past you while the others can't you can have the edge.

I definitely used their anger against me in my advantage the rest of the night.. playing back at them in alot of their hands becauase i could tell they were coming at me out of fustration

Yeah it doesn't sounds like you were being rude at all, it sounds like they were. They were probably trying to get you to go on tilt by calling you raybans haha. But anyways, being rude can sometimes help you if it puts your opponent on tilt, but beware, if you are rude to fish and really inexperienced players then it will scare them off and you won't be able to make as much money from them. Just be rude to the regs and try to get them tilting, haha.

I think it's important to understand that you can be "rude' without being hostile. I like to call it "Locker Room Talk".

Back in high school, the guys were always giving each other crap about something, it was just part of being a guy - and it was especially true in the locker rooms. It was never meant to really hurt the other person's feelings, it was all done in light hearted manner, a lot like the stuff I talk about at the poker table with the guys - but as light hearted as it was, you remembered that stuff in competition and always wanted to get back at them. Someone makes a smart remark about your girlfriend and you knew it was all in fun, but you also wanted to make sure they felt that extra aggressive tackle later on in practice.

Sometimes it's giving them crap about their girlfriends, being wrapped around their wive's fingers, etc... It's enough that it urges them to retaliate on the poker table, and usually end up making a dumb move. Obviously, you know you're not always friends with the people at a live table, but just nit picking on their outfit out of humor is enough that it can make them do something to get back at you on the table that ends up working in your favor.

Again, I'm never so rude that I start to push the boundaries of human indecency, picking on them to the point of suicide, but usually it's just enough that you just start to get under the skin and a bit annoying.

LOL - no, based on your version of events you did nothing wrong and I wouldn't call it rude. Sounds like they were, if anything.

Yea i was pretty shocked lol but i found it quite hilarious.. Im the first one to be nice and polite but after they called me rude and giving me nicknames and sayin this and that.. I enjoyed needling them because it clearly put them on tilt.. i was however disappointed when they both left after the woman won a decent pot off of a fish

Actually I find that when you wear sunglasses it actually makes everyone think you're staring at them all the time which makes you more visible.

awkwardly staring at a player for 5 minutes is by far my favorite thing to do I've seriously taken players out of their game that way

First I would like to preface with: I have been a poker dealer for 4 years.

Certain "old people" will take serious offense to anything said to them about poker. This sounds like the case in your story (assuming the info you provided is non-biased and accurate.) Really, the bottom line is, don't "try to be nice" to other people at the table, don't share information that you don't have to, and you will encounter plenty of rude people at the table.

I find an interesting correlation from my experience as a poker dealer. The more vocal and rude a person is, the worse they are as a poker player.

yea its definitely an intimidating feeling to be stared down but i also like them to not know im staring at them in spots like when flop, turn or river come out so i can try to judge their reaction to the card.. if they know im directly watching them it will be easier to hide.. but with my blackout raybans i can position my head to look as if im checking the flop when my eyes are watching them

Of course you were not rude, you were actually trying to be quite friendly it seemed.

On the Sunglasses issue. Unless everybody you play with knows you well, or you are playing some large MTT, or you have experience where you think your eyes may give you away (and players are good enough to catch it), I would suggest you not wear them at the table.

To me it is the same as giving away information. Most people view those who wear sunglasses at poker table as being experienced, aggressive etc. It is just something better left for the other players to figure out and not 'mark' you upon first seeing you. Even I will try to play back at a guy I don't know who I see has sunglasses on. Just my opinion on it.

I 100% agree with your perception of the loud rude people being bad players.. i believe the woman thought i was trying to rub it in her face or something what i had which was the furthest thing from the truth.. Even after trying to explain my case she just got more mad.. so for the most part i kept my mouth shut.. as i usually do..

Honestly, nobody at a 1/2 table is paying attention to your eyes. They only care about their cards and the flop. You can feel safe ditching the Raybans for a while.

Yea i understand what your saying and it makes alot of sense.. Im sure the standard perception of "poker player" is sunglasses, hoody, headphones lol it also doesnt help when dealers call me by first name hahah that kinda gives away the amount of time i spend there
