I'll set the scene:

$1/$2 6 Seat Cash Table, You sit down with $50. You choice to wait till the big blind hits you.

There are varied stacks at the table, One with a load, say $300. One with average, say $66. Two on the short side, $28 & $25 and the last with only $14.

You post the BB and your hole cards are 7 7 or AhKh or similar.

4 out of 5 call then what?

Do you raise or check, the reason i ask is you have as yet set no table image and if you put a huge raise in you risk looking like you're trying to make a statement. Lets face it we have all come across them online far too often, idiots who raise for no reason.

Been in this spot a few times myself but what do you folks think?

I think I check here regardless if I have 77 or AKs since it is my 1st hand at the table and I don't really have a read on anyone yet.

Raising with 77 isn't the best idea, and you are mainly playing this hand for set value, this you want as many opponents as possible, so raising would reduce that.

AKs is not a made hand, but you are ahead of all unpaired hands, so I would not be opposed to raising. However, if you are called, you are going to be playing the rest of the hand out of position, which makes it difficult, especially when you only sit down with 25 BB's...

I would just check and hope I hit a piece of the flop.

I would raise at least 3x the big blind if I had either hand. Even though you don't have a table image just yet, the common reaction to a new player who raises is playing tight until they get a feel of the new player's playing style. You have too many player in the pot and you have to take a shot of getting at least two of them out regardless.

I agree with chicubs here. You're out of position and unless you hit your set, it will be very difficult to win the hand because you don't have any reads on the players. Check and fold if you miss the flop.

tr1el, why would you raise 3x the BB here with a hand like 77?? You are going to get called by AT LEAST 1 player almost every time, then you have the task of playing a mid pocket pair out of position on a flop where there will almost always be an overcard.

With 77, you WANT a lot of players in the pot. When you hit your hand you will win bigger pots.

OMG I actually agree with cubbie on this. Check the hocky sticks. A raise will get called or even reraised and you want to avoid playing out of position with this hand.
It does make me feel a little better that I disagree with his advice to also check AKs. A healthy raise is in order here to thin the heard but since you are playing OP you need a plan for the flop. It will probably miss you. If you just get called then you come out guns blazing with a 1/2 to pot sized raise whether or not the flop misses you. If you're reraised then you must be a little more careful. There's a good chance you're up against a made hand who's unlikely to fold to anything but exposed high cards.
