How was your first live tournament? Yesterday I went for the first time to local poker club and played....well it didn´t end well. I was so nervous! Even though I do well online I busted really quickly from this 47 man tourney. I was dealt pocket KK and play them horribly but I was like okay, it can happen anyone for the first time. But two hands later I was dealt AA in middle position and I raised to 350...there was 1 limper before me and so far it seemed that everyone just calls with speculative hands. So I wanted to make my bets slightly larger to get paid off. But what I didn´t notice that level was just 25/50. I raised 7 big blinds! What an idiotic move! I felt like super rookie and it was awful experience for me. Anyone had similar experience? online poker is easy, you see how much a pot is, how much are blinds....I was kinda lost yesterday. :/ Have to improve my live play!

Yes, My first live tourney was dreadful as well. I limped with AA in early position hoping to get raised but didnt, awful flop for Aces and ended up folding to a three bet on the flop. Later I didnt make a raise vocal and grab the wrong chips and put in a huge over bet with KK and got no callers. Eventually I allowed myself to get so shortstacked that anyone was calling.

I can say that I only play in 3 to 4 live tournies a year but it didnt take me long to get more comfortable and I've had some good 4 figure cashes.

my first few months were strange... I went into poker teaching myself strategy playing extremely unorthadox and aggressive

I feared nothing or nobody and hated aggressive foes I was willing to mix it to try and command respect. I was willing to put all my chips in anytime anywhere if I sensed weakness.
and I wasn't particulary bothered if I lost as I expected to win.

I completely demolished the field and took first place around 28/29 players live. people thought I was a shark
the truth is I didn't have a clue what I was doing I couldnt even tell when the board was a chop and when I had won the pot.

I soon went on a learning curve and learnt alot of lessons and got knocked out in alot of live games closing to final table.

Nowa days im well researched - I do struggle to keep my A game which is pretty dissapointing, could of gone a long way. but hey thats life

Thank you guys for sharing! Today I played 45-mans online and I did very well so I guess I just need to get comfortable with actual chips and cards. :D

i luved my first live torney, it wasn't that long ago. i would rather play live as its atmosphere and makes me whaaaay more excited, plus the live pray is way better than online due to the fact that you can read opponents easier and for me having real chips infront of me changes my bettering style as its a little diff to onlice :)

First of all, I appreciate the level of your sincerity ;)

Then, I never played live poker but I'm sure that my first time will be just like yours: fail after fail after fail :D

I'm so used here online that everything is done for me (blinds, antes, allowed bet amounts) that my first time live can't run well

Mine was basically me being a bag of nerves but a happy ending.

It was a £10 rebuy comp in Liverpool, UK with about 45 runners. It was self-deal and at the time I could not shuffle. I played conservatively at first and ended up making two rebuys and one add on for a total of £40 plus fee.

I flopped a boat early on in after the rebuy period finished and quadrupled up. My hands were shaking like a sh*tting dog as I stacked my chips.

Made it to the final table and finally busted out in 5th place after overplaying pocket 6s.

Won £160.

My first live tournament was by far the highlight of my poker "career". I managed to satellite into the Irish Open by winning a package valued at more than $7000. The field had many of the best know Europeans, with Doyle and Todd Brunson as the most prominent Americans.

I busted just before the end of day 1, but got to play the entire time with a guy who had won an EPT or WPT on my right (plus he won this tournament the next year), so it was very interesting to get to watch someone at that level close up.

It was also tremendously cool to be in an environment that was so poker-oriented, especially since I don't have much occasion to talk poker with people in person. There, for four days, it was virtually the only thing anyone talked about.

I had played live ring before, but it was long ago.

I treated my first tourney as a learning experience. No goals other than to begin learning the whats, whens and hows of the mechanics of the tourney. I might have made a thread somewhere around here. I don't even remember how it turned out. No cash but I think I was happy with my 1st experience.

My first live tourney I played terrible poker, but I had a blast. I played way too scared and way too tight and eventually blinded out. At least you didn't blind out! :) I actually got my one and only ever (live or online) royal flush during that tournament. LOL, and boy did my "talent" waste that as well!

I also remember my next live tourney. I min raised with pocket aces. Min raised. I had also missed somehow that two players had limped ahead of me, not just one. And I min raised. Min raised. The flop gave 6-7 suited two pair and I was sent home.

I agree that online is a different game. And the buyin is a lot cheaper, too! But live... ah, nothing compares with it.

Great post, BTW, and thanks for sparking some good poker memories! :) Keep at it, your game will improve. I'm thinking mine has (it must have, right?), but I'm going to Vegas next month to play live for the first time in many, many years, so we'll see how it goes. Maybe I'm still just as bad as ever! But either way, it will be fun!

My first live tournament was with friends ( around 70 people) with $50 buy-in with total $3500 ( 3 paid places ). It was very exciting as it was my first live tournament but i could not reach the money :D
When i lost all my chips i got aces on pre-flop and went all in but lost from a straight to Jack... I will never forget that tournament and the emotions i had then :)

My first tournament I was very intimidated. I've only played at the Casino Tournaments maybe 5 or 6 times. Still don't feel that comfortable but most of times I have fun, no cashes yet.

Last week my Aces Full ran into Quads. Now that wasn't a fun trip lol.

my first live tourney was also at a local poker club and I was the 2nd person out (the 1st person out was a friend of mine who was also attending his first live tourney lol ). I was also nervous as hell and played very weak-passive.

Now though I don't go there often but when I do it is often cash / final table it as the players there are very passive and play most of their hands face up. I just don't like the people who run the club as they rake ridiculous amounts there cash games and tourney.

Lol my first live tourney I was really nervous. Made some mistakes (I saw a 1000 chip for a 100 chip), and way too tight on Day 1. After about 2 hours orso, I was more at ease but still making mistakes. I managed to survive Day 1, but got knocked out on Day 2.... JJ vs QQ (and another guy folded JJ, so 0 outs to win)

But a great experience!

That was boring, but hopefully it goes better next time. And I think it will. :) I have never played a live tourney myself, most try it sometime ! Good luck, see you at the tables :)

It was same the day I turned 21, went to the casino right up the street from where I lived, Santa Fe Station. Played one of the nightly $60 tournament. Final tabled it, but finished like 8th or 7th and ended up getting my $60 back.
