Page 9 - This is a discussion on How Did You Learn to Play Poker ? within the online poker forums, in the General Poker section; I learned from a cousin of mine I literally teaching the basics of poker. Then I started playing Freerolls at Pokerstars and I realized that
Remembered today as the first time I played poker. When I was 14, in my yard it was popular to play cards, going to the companies and played a thousand fool, borax, etc. Then one day someone suggested a game of poker. Rules no one really knew, first ever out of dispute.
Later, when I was in University, I learned about poker over the Internet, and decided to learn to play. Decided to get a no Deposit bonus through a well-known website. To get it,you had to pass a quiz, and read the rules poker games on the site. I began to read articles on the websites of poker topics and forums

How I started
One of my friends (coincidentally from Texas) taught me how to play no limit Texas hold em. After learning the rules I started playing online. I've read books (Harrington, Phil Gordon, Matt Janda, David Sklansky, etc). I played more and read more. I got into using Equilab and analyzing my play in Poker Tracker. Poker is a lifelong journey!

I learned how to play most card games when I was young staying with my grandma. We use to play uno , rummy and war. But I didn't really get into the game until I seen Chris Moneymaker on Espn during the WSOP. I was at a friends house drinking and BRBQ. When we learned he bought in for under 100 and won a WSOP package and is running good in the 10,000 buy-in, we were hooked. I took it more seriously then my friends. I bought a pc and downloaded a few poker sites. At that time I couldn't deposit. I looked around on some sites and seen a few different freerolls by poker forums. I checked out the poker forums and joined a few. I also found the, Tips from the pros , section on ftp. It was cool every day I would get a new tip sent to me threw my email from FTP. So I learned playing in freerolls and reading the tips from the pros section on FTP.

How I Started to Play Poker
I have just recently joined the world of poker, through my boyfriend, playing online and live tournaments, which helped me to develop an slight interest in the game, however this got a lot stronger when we travelled to LasVegas and witnessed the World Series of Poker live. It was an absolute fantastic opportunity, if you ever get the chance certainly take it and don't look back.
I played a fair few freerolls when I started, I even placed in my first one! It was only for a tiny amount but it was a cash out of over 8000 players. I always say it was my lucky 3 cent, how sad ehh??
I am hoping to continue to increase my learning through the research of books and videos and hopefully have the confidence and ability to play live one day afterall that is my next accomplishment!

How I learn and continue learning to play poker
I learned by watching some friends play on occasion and started playing myself when I met my husband and he played. I love watching videos, hearing others talk about how they play and put everything together with my own twist of things and I have turned out to be a great player. I prefer to play live but love online playing too when the people who are playing are playing serious.

I'm still learning.
I learned hand rankings from my grandparents writing them down. This was reinforced by my dad. I played in family home games until I was 17 when I was invited to play in neighborhood men's night game. Always dealer's choice(typically stud variants). Played more games like this while in the military. In retrospect, I played pretty well for having no actual training.
I played in a 7-stud game at a casino in Nevada and got smoked(at that time hold'em was just gaining popularity, there were more stud games running than hold'em). It was at this point that I decided these guys knew something I didn't. Then I read my first book "play like the pros". It was a goofy Helmuth book that compared players to animals.
That book led me to others and I found poker school online(a pay subscription with access to a lot of poker content and play money tournaments with prizes like tourney entries to their cash site). The play on that site was pretty solid. It was kind of like what the cardschat freerolls aim to achieve, quality play from players who care and seek to improve even though there isn't really money involved.
I wound up reading a lot of material. Played a lot of live limit hold'em(once upon a time the belief was that no limit couldn't survive as a cash game and limit would get more popular).
That leads to here, where I am on cardschat and finding articles to read here and there and trying to learn more. I don't think you should ever stop trying to learn if you want to be successful at this game.
