Ego and confidence in your skills are important in poker. More than I ever thought. I have noticed that most poeple think they are good players. You ask someone who is first playing and they will say they are bad, but anyone who has played more than 5-6 times and all of a sudden the move up to decent. Play in a couple tournaments and your a season veteran of the game and move to average to above average.

My friends and I were talking and I noticed something. They all thought they were good poker players. I have been listening closely and I think most of them believe they are above average in skill yet none of them have won any tournaments and only make it in the money once in awhile. They all have read the books and win in a home games. That automatically puts them above the fish, LOL. I sat down an actually looked at all my results from the last year and did stock of my game and here is what I came up with. I thought others might get a kick out of it and do the same.

I would barely put myself in the average catagory. I make it to the money about 35-40% of the time I play tournaments locally, yet I know from where I live the competition is not that good so I take that into consideration. I have played in lots of local live tournaments and have played in some bigger regional ones. I have never played in a game with a buy-in of over $500 so I think that eliminates me right there from the big time. I have never had the screws put to me with a really large amount of cash in front of me. I still get caught by people slow playing and get unnerved by calling stations, maniacs and overly aggressive tables. I don't change my style to the table fast enough. I don't get reads on playing styles as fast as I should. I am trying to get general style in about 1/2 hour (tight, passive, weak, aggressive) on the table and not doing it well.

I would like to know where you feel your skills are at? Most importantly why?

I know I still have a lot to learn but I know enough not to make too many mistakes. Still, it's not enough to consider myself a GREAT player. Good player maybe. I rarely win tournaments but I do go far in them. So judge for yourself.

I consider my skills as average. Not a beginner but not high in the amatuer category either. Still have a lot to learn. I have came into the money on few SitnGoes, either 1st,2nd or 3rd place {1 table, 10 players}, In the money on at least two multi-table tourneys with 20 plus players {$2.20 buy-ins, $5.00 buy-ins} Big 1st place win for me at a real multi-table win with 27 players $520 winnings. Out of about a dozen home games with 5 or more players I have won about 6 or 7 either winning it out straight or came in 2nd or 3rd. Whatever the payouts were at the time. So there you go. I'm definitly no pro at the game but I wouldn't consider myself amatuer status like Hachem on pokerstars.

That's a hard one but voted ave.,probably not the right one for me. LOL> It's a hard decision ,think it depends on what type of cards your getting ,luck and table players. It's Poker, a gamble either way you look at it. One last thing I forgot to add was "Luck".

Wow this is a good thread, I am curious to see all of the responses. I personally voted for average but thats probably a lie. I am not near 50% I don`t think, but I have won a few $10 sng`s and placed in the money in a few mtt`s. And even won a couple play money mtt`s, at pokerstars with over 5000 people in each one.

I would say average as of now, but my game is undertaking a dramatic change. I've broadened my horizons and started playing different games. I'm reading people better and only playing better hands. I've done quite a bit of cashing in 5 and 6 tourneys at Stars a day. I've also been lighting up the 7 card stud micro tables. In another month my vote might be a little higher.

I would place myself at the lower side of average. I hold my owm most times and place in the money. Probably much less than 50%of the time though. I don't read people fast enough and I get impatient or bored

I put myself at decent because I win my fair share of SNGs, but when it comes to MTTs I consistently finish just outside the bubble. Usually do to some stupid mistakes that I realize after the hand. I have a lot to learn, me thinks. :D

I rate myself good. When i play and play to win I either win or finish in the money. But the key part of this is that i can't be distracted. At my home and the amount of time that i get free makes that hard, so I usually tank the game myself.

I would rate myself as a good player. I started off last year with a zero balance (freeroll whore) and now have money on 7 different sites and set up a bank account just for online poker, all with no money of my own. My SNG play I consider to be my strong point and need to work on my MTT and ring game play. Hopefully I skillz to pay the billz someday, though I would never play poker for a living but it would be nice to retire a little early with some extra cash earned through playing.

I'm a good player , unfortunately for me I am a huge victim of suckouts and of losing control of my game once I get devistated by one (Oh he's got The Tilt)...
Karma getting back at me from all the times when I got lucky and made bad calls in my early game.

I think I would do better at a professional level then in all these freerolls and what not because I play differently then most of the cats out there. And am getting a lot better at bluffing....

And I forget who said it but bluffing is half the game. Though I'm good player with the means to become better. Though thats just a matter of time , dedication , and if I felt poker was my calling...

Which while I love the sport , I've already a first love when it comes to "work" And I think anyone who's not ready to give their all into the sport will not remain entirely successful. They might get lucky , but will overall become dominated by the veterans.

I rated myself as good also (yes, even after that massive Donk in the first HORSE event). If we were just talking hold'em I would have rated myself lower but when I throw in stud and draw I think I'm an all-round good player...

Well tournamentreporter.com says i'm in top 5% so I should say Skillz to pay the Billz I suppose ;), but i'll be modest and say good (I make a profit, so I suppose I must be slightly above average). If I only had a bit of luck...

(P.S, on the poll, decent should be higher than average shouldn't it? And just because you're a rookie doesn't mean you're bad does it - I picked up game within a couple of weeks).

"How would you rate your poker skills?"
In draw and stud poker, i have played for many years and would consider myself to be a good player. Now for hold em poker, i don't think i have any skills yet, just luck. Thanks to online play sites were one can play 24 hrs a day, i can see my skills in hold em raise to 'scrub' level in a decent amount of time. Plus, since finding Cardschat, i have read many posts that have been very helpful in the learning process.

The numbers are which percentile I'd place myself in, or?

Is the presumption also that it's the percentile of the game and limit of my choice? Or is it over-all poker?

My grandmother taught me to play poker when I was 5. Needless to say, I come from a card playing family. My dad gave me a software program about 10 years ago that taught me to learn the basic strategies of holdem.
So where do I rate my abilities? Thats a tough one. I chose just below average because there is always room for improvement. Yes, I have won a few tourny's, and manage to squeeze a few bucks a day from the tables on line, but pay the bills with it,lol,I don't think so,lol.
