I always heard that if you take an idea and improve it 10%, you'll get rich. I was wondering, what are your thoughts of playing online with a webcam?

Not really possible and pretty pointless for those playing with more than one table.

Until most of the world is running 100M internet, it won't be a pleasant experience.

I have no interest in a webcam and it would probably be somewhat of a deterrent if anything.

Why would I want to see people's cams while they play?

Here are my quick steps to improve the game:

Limit people to 8 cash game and 8 tourney seats.
Provide a free basic HUD ala Merge to SOMEWHAT level the playing field for all.
Lower the rake on PLO and microstakes NLH cash games.
Get rid of SN/SNE and replace it with tiered RB geared at recs.
Cap rake on MTTs and build more rake free satellites that run more often.

Just some random thoughts off the dome.

Actually it is possible & has been done for a long time now. 888Poker has webcam tables & webcam tournaments.

My suggestion:

Lower tourney rake fees by 50% in SNG's with 27, 45 & 90man format. & call it 1/2 price poker
(lower STT SNG fees by 25%)

It would bring on-line one step closer to live, and could let you see opponents so you can see some of their tells. BUT some players might point the camera at the wall so others can't see them. You would also need 9 video feeds so you saw everyone at the game. By adding audio to the video, you could then introduce table talk which would occur much more often, if people don't need to type into the chat window.

Webcam is not a new idea. In 888poker has long been used webcam during the game, and these types of tournaments with webcam are not very popular.

I don't see the value in cutting revenues to an already financially troubled industry.

Cheers!

I think this is not the best option. You need something else.

Well, there are two ways to make profit, expand margins and/or expand top line growth/slow the shrinkage.

I absolutely agree lowering rake for almost all MTTs is a silly idea which probably wouldn't expand fields much at all resulting in lower profits.

OTOH, TARGETED slashing of SOME STTs/SNGs/Sattys would IMHO help regrow that sector which has really suffered as training/progress have made grinding them/playing them for profit impossible or close to impossible in many cases with the vig figured in.

I might even go so far as issuing special rakeback/incentive along with the reduced rake on some sites, bc SNGs are close to being dead at many levels.

1) I don't know that online players are itching to make online poker identical or even closer to live poker. The two things are highly related, but on the whole different things entirely.

2) It seems like people on CC are pissed whenever needling and or competitive table talk is introduced anyway, and lets be honest, if you've heard people on Xbox live, the kind of table talk you are apt to hear at an online poker table will be pretty bad.

3) I just wouldn't be interested in being on cam for a multitude of reasons, and I know many people are like me...playing in their underwear, with crazy hair right when I wake up on the weekends....etc. etc....older players and women especially probably enjoy the relative anonymity that online poker brings, and ofc many simply don't want to be seen gambling at home.

I have often pondered the relevance of playing online poker with a webcam. Having read the comments in this thread though, it has got me thinking.

Most of the tourneys that require webcams, such as on 888 are relatively low buy in and relatively low prize funds.
I understand the argument about some idiots who play in their underwear or something stupid, but imagine!......... What if a regularly played tourney, with say a $215 buy in on a Sunday night, REQUIRED you to play with a webcam, do you think you would? Do you think people would avail themselves of webcams to simply play this game?

I think the seriousness of the tourney, and the buy in, would determine the level of competence or stupidity of the players in that tourney.

The webcam Estonian experience and not give. If you want to win, you play 25-30 tables 10 hours a day minimum. Then maybe you'll win, but not sure;)

The WWW can not support a large scale video conference which is what webcam poker would essentially be.

It will be someday, but not now. 10 years off at min, IMHO.

This is 100% correct. How people interact across a table in person is nothing like how they will act when located across the globe and behind a webcam/microphone.

With a smaller, private player pool webcams and audio may be able to work, but I can see it being a good thing at general public tables.

hmm lets see how to improve online poker. Make the poker sites offer a service not a product. To do away with huds or player tracking software or in other words the bots. This would level playing field. Not to use anonymous players but to use real names so you know who your playing. And to prosecute cheaters by the law. These are only a few and would be a good base for a good start.
