If you have ever hosted a home game for family and friends you have likely run into a few people who had no idea how to play at all.

This article covers the very basics of how to play Texas Hold'em cash games style. Give it a read and let us know if there is anything you would add to it - and if you think it is helpful in teaching people who have never played how to play the game:

Texas Hold'em Rules

I want to know who chose the names lol:

Patience to teach who doesn't know how to play is essential, after all, they will be your companions for the next matches. Let's remember that drinking cups should be kept off the felt, on side tables or empty chairs. It's never advisable to mix alcohol with poker, however, if beer is indispensable to cheer up, i suggest that the value of the game should be low as possible.

Well I'm not a good teacher but I have to admit that I delayed 3 months to learn poker.Lol and the most difficult I remember was two pairs. For example:
I have 8 J vilian has JQ =flop 2 2 8 turn J river Q.I couldn't understand this simple hand.I learned 3 months later .Lol.But this happens sometimes.

I would tell them to relax teach them etiquette do not fold or raise before your turn if they knew the hand rankings.
Would print off a chart of what beats what if they had no idea of hand rankings and advise them to sit out watch the game for awhile and answer all their questions honestly if they were considering playing most people pick up the basics watching and then learn as they go.

Yep - many poker players lack patience so it is a great skill to master early on.

We always have beer at our home games - and we play $10 sng's.

Everyone has to start somewhere - it can take a while to learn. :)

I found a poster of a hand ranking chart and we always hang that on the wall for the beginners.

I personally believe that poker is like many jobs out there but the only job you like you will pay lots of attention and be very caution and be very fruitful if you really like it.

The last time I taught a group to play, I found that a common problem was people wanting to fold when it didn't cost them any more to call and see some cards.

I think it did help when someone asked a question, to ask the table if anyone could answer the question. It seems to increase the learning curve of the entire table.

Good article on the foundtations Usefull as always CC =)
Since we talking alco (not that much of a poekr strategy) I would say - let new players have fun. Just chill situations as if you are not a winning shark playing against fish, but just a recriational setting were you have fun. This will alow new players to get in to the game with out going full supercomuter mode and being scared that if they call an over bet with 2nd pair in 4 way pot like an idiot.

A good article for beginners, written easily . At one time, as soon as I started to be interested in poker, I could hardly find an article that would explain to me the rules of the game in an easy form.
So I started to play and learn the rules during the game

It's a good article, well-written and covers the basic fundamentals without cluttering one's mind with insignificant fluff. When having a home game with begginers and recreational players, I find that many times they forget to put the blinds, they don't know exactly what the min-raises are, and so on.....I haven't participated in limit Holdem so far, only in No Limit games.

Holy crap, me trying to explaing how to play holdem to people, I can barely write a HH for analysis without sounding like a two year old. But home games is a better place for people to learn the flow of the game and such and the same with bar leagues , its like when people come to the real live game without a clue its like are you FN joking me.

Excellent article, I always recommend to the new players a lot of practice before betting real money, I have organized poker tournaments in my house with friends but in most times the luck of the beginner is incredible lol, I think that for beginners there is that to teach them to play in bets with limits so that they study well the development of the game and do not lose control of the game, good also the important thing is to have a good time with friends at a poker table

This article is pretty simple. Straight Forward. I think anyone could learn Texas Hold'Em just by reading this article.
I usually just say to people that haven't played Texas at all is,
"This game is a lot like 5-Card Draw." Then they get the basics of the game. then I tell them exactly how the game works from the Dealing/Betting section of the article. from there we play the game at ease while we give pointers to the new players that haven't played yet.

I, for me personally never went to the casino to sit at a cash game, so the 1$/2$, 2$/4$ cash game buy in limits are new to me...so thanks for pointing that out!

Firstly it's mandatory for them to learn the hand rankings then I'll give them some chips and let them play. Home games are the best place to get some hands on experience when learning to play. Everyone places a small wager and after every game we talk and learn from each other's mistakes!

This is great and tells exactly how to play and to bet . My advice would be if you have people that have never played before , then go through the hands with everyone having them in front so everyone can see what their hands are, and then you can explain how to play each hand .
Repeat this step for at least a few hands and even for everyone to have a turn at dealing to . Then start with them holding their cards to themselves.
If you are the only one that knows how to play - sit out and just help everyone learn and help them with their hands .

Have a list of the winning hands and the order of what beats what. ( I personally think that is the hardest part for people to learn is the order of what is the ranking of the hands)
Also , a colorful button to indicate dealer , and explain the importance of that - better yet in live games make each one deal like you do in Eucher. It is good to learn how the cards are dealt in poker to.
With the dealing , then it is easy to explain - show them the small blind position and then the big blind and put it in the pot as the dealing starts . Deal the first card to the small blind and they pay , deal the next card and make the big blind pay and so on.
The thing is start slow for newbies and then they should get it right the first time.
Hopefully . Then have fun !

What I would like to add to this poker is:
The game is very dynamic and is often personal of the person who plays, that is, each one has a style of game that suits, for the one who is starting to seek to develop his own style that will win.
The game is full of emotions, it can make you happy and you will find yourself frustrated.
To be good at poker you need to play a lot and draw conclusions from the game itself.

I liked the article , very helpful indeed , useful information and good questions/answers at the end :)
I think it should be better if the hierarchy of the card was referred in one sentence somewhere in the paragraph where it describes the best hands of the players in the picture (poker table) . Maybe , also , the 2 cases with the 1+2 charts(Player-Stack-Betiing action) it would be better to have above a picture with the poker table , the poker players' names and stacks , nothing more , easier that way to follow the action I think :)

Texas holdy - a kind of poker most popular today. To each player is given on two cards, and his purpose – to collect, using two cards and five general, the strongest possible hand. During the game it is necessary to be defined whether it is worth playing a starting hand whether to answer a rate depending on chances whether to bluff counting on weakness of a hand of the opponent and so on. The majority of poker tournaments plays on holdy, this game it is often possible to see on television, and winners of large tournaments, such as VSOP, become stars and millionaires. A game on the Internet is not less popular, but the first steps in a game it is possible and just in a campaign of friends.

Poker is an exciting game which needs, skills, psycology, maths and luck. We can say that poker is like two games in one game. The one game is played with the cards and the other with the bets. The bets part determins the winner!

Good article for beginners!I think the best solution would be to hang a poster with combinations .There are 10 combinations and this should help the beginner to understand the meaning of the game. And it is desirable to explain that playing Texas hold'em, combinations-this is what determines the superiority or weakness of one player over another in a particular hand.

A very interesting way to teach people who have never had contact with texas holdem is to play with the hand cards face up, that is, open, so that everyone sees the strength of their hand both before the flop and after and after the turn and the river. I've done it here at home and it's exciting.

In Texas Hold'em, there is a style of play for each table position and a strategy for each set of cards you get on hand.
With AA, KK has a game strategy and for AK, AQ there are other game strategies and so do smaller players.
It is very important that having good cards in hand is observing the behavior of opponents in the game, through this observation you will be able to make the best call or fold decision.
