Hey guys just curious as to how many chips i should buy for a cash home game. There is a place in my town that runs their games and basically all i ever see on the table are 1 & 5 dollar chips. Is it fine to just purchase two denominations / colors or should i throw in a third for 10's but just not too many? The game will typically be 8-10 handed. And if yoh guys have a recommendation for which chips to purchase please let me know. I prefer relatively simple color chips. Thanks guys. By the way i am looking for casino grade clay chips.

That depends on your guys' bankroll more than anything. Unless you're in Vegas and friends with Negreanu, 1 and 5 will do just fine.

pokerchips.com has some nice chips.
I prefer ceramic to clay but they have both.

I've got around 500 chips and we've never used more than half but we have a max buy of $150.

Well we will be playing .25/.50 or .50/1.00 typically. So buybins of 50 or 100ish maybe occasionally a 1/2 but i doubt often if ever. Im thinking for a .25/.50 game 3 denoms of .25 cent .50 cent and 1.00 chips? And for .50/ 1.00 maybe .50 cent 1.00 & some 5 dollar chips? Maybe im thinking two much, but the way the backroom game runs with inly two denoms got me thinking. I enjoy doing things right the first time. Basically, is it pointles for a home game to hse more than 2 denoms or is three the percect amount and what would you reccomend for the stake we will be playing. I appreciate the responses guys

You don't need a .50 chip. For your game, I would want a .25, $1, and $5.
General rule is that you want then next denom to be 4 to 5 times the previous. So like $1, $5, $20 or $25, $100 would be a common chip lineup.

Not really a fan of CiC chips personally. I'd recommend getting samples of anything you're considering to be sure you like the feel as well as the look.

I had custom chips done years ago (my design on ceramic blanks) and love them.

I had the green rerun after this pic because I didn't think the state stood out enough on that chip but I don't have a current pic.

Thanks guys. Wvhillbiy, how many of each denom if i went with those three do you think would be good? Also how much would it cost roughly for a set like yours thats customized in 1000 pieces? By the way this was a repsonse i received on another forum

If I wanted lots of chips, planned to keep 1000 chips on hand, had a big enough table to handle big stacks etc... would have been a stack of quarters and 2 stacks of dollars to each, and topping off with $5 chips. I also kept $10 chips when we got deep, and a stack of non-denom chips if we got really deep.

For a 10 person game, thats 200 quarter chips, 400 dollar chips and the balance in $5 chips brings the bank to $2350. If you think you'll want/need a bigger bank, sub out the last 100 $5 chips for $20 or $25 chips. I like the idea of $20 chips for rebuys, but it's personal preference.

I think you'll be good with 100 quarters on the table to start, and 400 dollar chips should make for enough chips not to worry about making change. There are generally guys who will run out of small chips all the time, regardless of starting stacks. Maybe a couple of players who like to hoard the small chips as well.

For the $1/2 casino games, there is rarely a need for chips bigger than $5, so your game should function just fine."

Depends on the number of players you want to cover and the usual buy-in for your game. If you want enough for 10 players with $50 starting stacks, I'd go with Qty 200 quarters, 250 $1s, and 50 $5s. I'd do starting stacks of 20 quarters, 20 $1s, and 5 5s, for $50 for a total of 500 chips with 3 denoms.

I got my chips about 6 years ago and got a great deal at the time of .25 each. Not sure what they would run you today. You can probably find out the going rates over at http://www.chiptalk.net.

Sounds great man. I appreciate everything everyone has said but especially you hillbilly. So now that would take up 500 chips of my 1000 piece set, so could i / should i maybe add some more of each of those denominations which will bring me to 650 then throw in some 25's & just maybe enough 50's? I know i can always buy more but it feels good when things go smooth as butter initially. Im thinking 300 quarters, 350 one's, 100 five's... Which will bring me to 750. Then add 150 teenty-five's & 59 five's? How would that work? Keeo in mind i do like having small denominations so people have more chips to make the $whatever.75, $whatever.25 bets as well as i would like to fit in those larger chips so i can enlarge the game if so chosen. Let me know if you think that works and thanks a bunch. PS my apologies i think i earlier meant to put ykur post on another site because i liked it and wanted to see what people said about your opinion

Yeah, if you're buying 1000 chips I'd probably go with 400 quarters, 400 $1s, 100 5s, and 100 $20 or $25s. That would give you $3000 or $3500 in cash value of chips. More than you need for any 50nl game and would allow you to do starting stacks of just quartes and $1 if you just wanted big chip stacks (40 quarters and 40 $1s starting stacks).

Now if you think your game may move to a 1/2 game you might want to reduce the quartes and $1s a bit and get more $5s.

I do not like the Coin in Center (CiC) chip designs. I actually prefer a lighter 10g chip (like most casino chips). Most cheaper chips you buy will try to sell you with a heavier is better line. They're just trying to market their 14g+ slugged plastic chips. I don't like the feel or the sound of most of those type chips. I will repeat, get samples before you commit to buying 1000 chips!

hey guys, sorry to bump this thread but its taken me a little longer to purchase than expected. im purchasing my table through bbo, piking up the aces pro decked out with the speed felt, cupholders, dealer tray & lock box. as for chips im purchasing 1000 of the claysmith milano's. as far as chip denominations go right now im going with 200 quarters, 350 ones, 400 fives, and 50 twenty-fives. let me know if this will work for my mainly .50 / 1.00 game, occasioanlly .25 / .50, once in a blue moon 1/2 game. thanks for all the insight guys, going to give it a few hours to see if you guys think my denoms NEED tweaking and will be firing with the purchase

It's more 5's than you'll likely ever need unless the game goes to primarily 1/2. I like the chip choice. Just a basic, classic look. Edge spot variation would be nice but for a relatively inexpensive clay chip they're very nice.

thanks for the insight. i figurewith 400 fives if i had 10 players that all wanted to play a 1/2 i could just throw everyone a stack of fives and they can get change from the dealer. thats how a local spot does it. do you think itd be wise for me to knock the fives back 50 chips and up the ones + 50 ? or i should be fine?

For your typical game either will be fine but I think I'd rather have more 1s than 5s.

ok cool. i dont really want to pull from the 5 dollar chips so id have to pull maybe 25 chips from the twenty five's, or pull some from the quarters. realistically it would only give each player another 5 + ones if i did so. just tough because i want to be able to play more than one stake and not be choking for chips. i think im probably just going to order the way it is, i can always scoop more when need be. thanks for your help buddy, everyone else as well. if i can find this form again in a few weeks once i have everything ill throw some pictures up or a review

It depends a lot of your friends , if they will accept the value of the chips and if they will have the buy- in of the chips in play time . I have a suitcase with 500 chips and playing 1-100 and so on , when I play with some friends who do not have the buy-in necessary I change the value of the chips , the worth 1 are worth 0.10 and so on.
