How long will it, or has it took you to become a professional poker player?

What will it take to become what you want to be in poker? And I don't even mean getting sponsorships and deals and all that..I mean making that money to live on poker for bread and butter?

It is difficult to answer this question because it depends on your abilities, work ethic and your situation in life as well (i.e., your monthly expenses, where you live). If playing poker professionally is something that you really, really want to do then you should just focus on doing what you need to do to make that happen. It will happen when it happens.

I think that the best option to start with, be semi-pro, ie have a certain stable source of income, and most of his free time to give the game. Then many of the points in this article will be disregarded. And then, when your highly paid hobby financially surpass your main source of income, you can safely replace the time you spend on your work on the case, which will be pleasant and useful for you without increasing the amount of time you set aside for games poker. In this case the game you will definitely not get bored ...

you are professional player when at list you won a big money price....then you can quit your job and play only poker......it doesn't worth it if you are playing for your bread and butter, its too risky!!!

I have 4 years of playing poker. I believe that the level of my game is above average player.I measured at my achievements. To the level of profesional I still probably need about 4 years. It all depends on you. Read articles pro players. To become a good player it is necessary to gain experience of the game. You must play with experienced players. Choose a table where these players more. If you are just starting to play, you must first play at tables with simple chips or freerolls to remember poker hands.

hmm yeah, interesting subject to talk about and I agree with most of you guys but let me ask you this, say you did put all the hard work, effort and dedication, you do everything in the right way where you have won a few bugs there and then, even tho, you haven't won a huge money..so does this mean you are on the right track? does this mean that it will happen eventually but its just matter of time?

Personally, I would say that its best to take baby steps, study and put your hard work into practical as well as do your 9 to 5 job on the side or whatever..and see where the journey takes you! this may sound hard to do but you know what they say -when there is a will, there is a way!

Would you agree? =)

it could take years or months, it all depends how smart you are and how much time you give to it.

and like everything else in life you must have the brain, the knowledge and the experience.

once a wise man said, the one that he is best in what he do he is the one made any possible mistake . (= experience )

I think if you couldn't climb to the at least middle levels during a year, you better to finish play. You haven't ability and only by labour you will not achieve a success. It will be found other talented and more trainee players who will beat you while you are learning 3-years-ago poker.

it all depends on you. How fast you learn and how dedicated you are to the game. You can't become a professional in any job without putting the time and hardwork needed.

It depends on how much you play, for how long and how many tables at a time, it is a lot of effort to be a professional poker player, you need a second income before being one :)

It will be proffessional when you are fully focused on the game and no other job is needed and you still developing your skills, but before that you need make income to make-up any possible rookie mistakes you go straight for real money etc. You may consider semi-proffesional until you are really ready to be pro when you beat the poker game easily.

If you do not invest in your knowledge, if you're not educated enough, you can play 100 years will not go pro.
how much you invest in yourself, so that much come back to you

first of all you should study, and study and study, find who are the best players of world, watch how they play, read strategys, articles, then you will note your game slowly increase, the biggest mistake is think that only play poker without improve the skills and dream that in one month you will buy your first ferrari, as always on our lives, what we want to do we need to discipline and patient

How much time do you have to invest? There is a study somewhere that says to excel at anything it takes about 10,000 hours. Now you can probably make a living at poker without being an elite player. You probably need to be able to make a living at poker for some amount of time to become an elite player. It's going to take a lot more than reading a couple books and playing a few tournaments.

Less time than it takes to become a pro in something like basketball, but less time than it takes to go broke. :)

Cheers!

Yes I agree, but I mean if you only learn the rules and play 1000 hands per day you will be a regular player (except if you have a super natural ability) but if you read, study the best way to play and play the same 1000 hands per day you have more chances to become a elite player but even if you do dont mean you will get.
An example, if a basketball player plays 5 matches for week only knowing the rules, he might be good, but if he trains 5 times for week specifc situations and play 2 matches he probably will be better (not a good example but I hope you can understand what I mean lol :p).

Good coaching definitely helps.
