Recently started to translate a series of articles related to health and poker, namely the effect of poker on our health. Its author, Barry Carter, share their experiences in this regard. Take the time to read, you may find yourself something useful.

Harmful if poker your health? .
2006-12-10
Barry Carter

My life can be divided into several stages, during which I was fat, thin and began to play poker.

In his youth, when I was 20-23 years old, I was quite overweight: my weight reached approximately 108 pounds. Most likely the reason for it was quick snacks, TV and computer games. It was over, when I went to university. Life in the hostel was not sweet, persistent malnutrition, ridicule roommates brought up the fact that it was decided to change my life. I became a regular visitor to the university sports club, read a lot about diet and healthy eating. Work on a lasted long enough, but I got his way, throwing off the weight up to 78 pounds!

And then, a couple of years ago I met a beautiful girl named Gina. At that time I began to seriously pursue poker. Hin was also partial to this game, which is probably why I was able to get through to her heart. I found one that had so long sought. As a result, the sport has been postponed, as the desire to please the other girls, thanks to the excellent physique, stopped being my motivation. I also stopped reading books on fitness and healthy eating, because my mental stimulation was playing poker.

Now my weight is 92 kg. Sport has not abandoned, however, no set program's train. The diet also causes poor, although it does not compare to the one that was at a weight of 108 kg. I am quite happy with my weight, despite the fact that went with a medium-sized clothing for the big one. What happened in the last month, made me seriously to think about their health ...

A month ago, I got sick, the reason - some kind of infection. After a while I recovered, but after 3 days I again became ill and I slёg. Within 5 weeks, I have been ill three times. It is obvious that my immune system was weakened, but what was the reason? I noticed that quickly tired of the night playing poker. Naturally, this did not help the game, rather - on the contrary. I remember once had a chance to participate in a tournament that began at 8 pm and last as long as 8 hours. Well-being after the tournament was terrible, whereas before he could not sleep for days and felt fine. Whether poker spoiled my health?

Ask yourself differently: maybe it's health has brought me thus ruining my career poker player? And suddenly the meaning of "poker" and "health" are trivial, then what? Maybe I need to focus on health to withstand heavy loads, playing at night? Or to place on the shelves their life priorities, leaving little room for poker?

Questions whether poker spoils our health, how can we improve the health of spoiled if we can improve the quality of their game, leading a healthy lifestyle, I'm going to answer as soon as possible, exploring himself.

I don't think that physical health is so important in poker. As long as you're not just about dying in tables. Of course it is not bad to be in good shape and you certainly need some life outside of poker, but that does not have to be sports.

Mental health is more important, especially for MTT player. I'm a nerd that has never had problem on physical side pressing in 10 hours sessions, but mental side is taking me down, quickly and badly. For this month, being up around +8k€ and a poker-golf-trip to Spain next month. No, it isn't. I'm just constanly haunted by misfortunes, bad luck and generally bad players getting so much more lucky than me in generally brilliant tournaments that people who are able to think can't lose.

I guess... perfectionism and MTT playing together just isn't mentally healthy. I am not content with average or even good results, I want them to be excellent if not perfect.

Poker players need to make time for physical activity. Half an hour of cardio (running) everyday or simply walking a mile makes a lot of difference as it gets our heart rate up as opposed to doing nothing at all.

With this we will see improvements in our physique, stamina, alertness and ability to focus, stress levels, and sleep patterns. These small improvements go a long way in improving our state of mind which in turn will help our poker game. :marchmell

Also try and and eat healthy and drink lots of water. It is better if we avoid fast foods - stay away from those tasty chips and fries, :pepsi:and such drinks.

Poker for me personally very much coached my patience. I used to think too hard about every defeat bedbity. Now I do not take close defeat, something lost, the other won. In fact, poker is really affects the psyche, especially those who bet on poker all that they have. As for me, Poker causes lack of sleep))

I always try to take at least a 30 minute walk before and after a session. The before is mainly just to get the blood running, sitting for extended periods of time, like with poker, can cause blood clots. During my 5 minute breaks I try and grab a healthy snack, fruits, nuts, and veggies. The 30 minute session after poker is just to release all of my poker stress for the day, or celebrate.

I have never thought about poker and health whether it be physical or mental. I can see mental health being a factor in poker but I am not sure why physical health would be an factor. Personally I am very active physically and play poker for fun to relax and use my mind.

Everything's harmful if it's done for more than it should be. Also, people underestimate drinking fluids, preferably water - I've developed a habit to drink at least one glass of water every 30 minutes, and I haven't felt better for a long time.

poker can not harm the health , can only be on the nervous system . My opinion is that poker helps. develops thinking , memory, patience. in the game of poker , I see more pluses than minuses

Actually poker does not differ much from any sedentary work with its particularities. So, for poker players physical activity is a must.

I like running at least 2 to 3 times a week. It helps clear the mind and I can focus better.

I do not think that affects you..only if you get angry .... and you begin to have problems with the nerves..otherwise do not see why you affect..only if you can not get higher from the computer .... to respect your schedule daily meals and sleep ....

Stress IMO is the biggest health worry but, then almost anything can cause stress. I just don't believe that poker could cause any health problems that didn't currently exist in your behavior
