I was reading an article today about the use of music when playing poker. I've heard about people using music while playing poker before, but not to this extent. Several pros hand pick out the music they're listening to depending on the situation and apparently it helps their game.

Has anyone used music in poker to their advantage or know more about it?

hmm...i've never thought of it as an advantage, but I'm a music addict.
I'm surprised my cheap Dell speakers haven't blown yet because they're ALWAYS on - and I mean always :)

I do play music during poker, but it doesn't really change my mind state or anything like that; I just enjoy it.

I saw that article. I was going to experiment to see what types of music create a winning mood. Might be kinda tough because my taste in music is so widely varied. I've got everything from big band Glenn Miller to Alien Sex Fiend. From Amy Grant to Rob Zombie.

Sometimes I even use a nature sounds machine for background noise. From ocean waves to rain drops to a waterfall. Not sure if it helps, though.

I personally use music when I play poker. It is a very good way for me to focus only on whats going on. I also like to choose the tempo of the music when I play too. During a tournament I like to listen to some music thats easy on the ear(ie. Al Green, Chaka kahn...)and when I enter a cash game I like to have something more fast tempo and with lots of hip flow(ie. hip hop music). Something easy on the ears during a tourny helps me relax and be more patient and the faster music during a cash game helps me get a little more pumped to be more aggressive. This is me personally, but what do you all think?

Last night, for example, I had won quite a bit, only to see it slip away. I noticed I had lost my focus a bit, and turned on the song La Grange by ZZ Top... That opening riff to me just instills a sense of urgency, and I kind of got into it and buckled down. Make a long story short, I did alright from then on. Its hard to explain how I use music, but I too select my music carefully while playing. When I want to make sure to stay calm, I will put on some nice smooth music. When I want to focus I'll put on something a little harder, like La Grange for example. When I am po'd I put on something really soothing. I basically select a genre of music that supplements the feeling I need to be feeling so to speak... Does that make sense?

Alien Sex fiend and Rob Zombie, huh? Interesting tastes... I prefer Children on Stun for my gothy music and Gravity Kills for my industrial metal, personally... but I have a similarly wide range of music that I vary between.
Sometimes I find vocal trance good, sometimes Marilyn Manson. As much as anything else it helps ensure I don't get bored waiting for a playable hand, but in some situations I'll use it to affect my mood. Something punchy and aggressive can be good for helping avoid timidity in a game, but if you find you're stepping on the 'hit-your-hand-or-bluff' pedal too much, then something softer's definitely the way to ease up a bit.

I like to play loud music (whether it's heavy metal, angry hip hop, etc) when I want to convey strength and get my opponents to fold, and quieter music (classical, electronica, etc) when I am sitting on a monster and want to convey weakness to get a call.

Wait... what's that? What? Really? My opponents can't hear the music coming out of my speakers? So they have no idea that...? And this whole time...? Really? So I've been...? You're sure?

Crap.

When im in a game i MUTE everything, except the site im playing at, my TV goes off and sometimes i take my phone off the hook, i do better with NO distractions, ive had times where someone will call me on the phone and lose track of what im doing, so if its an important tourney, the phone comes off the hook, it might seem funny to some, but it works for me.
