I play in a home game and when I deal Omaha I deal around until each player has four cards then I burn a card and set 3 for a flop then burn a card set one for the turn and then burn a card and place the last for the river. That is how I deal. Others deal around to each player till they have four then deal five to the center with no burn card and then there is one player who seems to be very lucky and he deals round 1 and 2 then places 2 in the center deals another round then two to the center then the last deal around the table till the last card is put into the line of 4 to be turned making a total of five in the center. I think this gives this dealer an unfair advantage as all the cards placed in the center are right after he deals a card to himself. Is my read of his dealing skills correct?

Do not pre-set boards, ever.

I agree, but in a home game this happens a lot.

I don't have a problem with it in that setting as long as the proper cards are burned and the proper cards hit the board.

Set boards regularly used in self deal games, does speed action up if dealer in hand.

I mean I agree but there really are no proper cards. They're all random anyway so it really has no effect on the hands played (unless the dude is just cheating). I mean if he dealt backwards it would be wrong but it wouldn't matter to the game.

I think for a home game it can vary but which ever method you decide to use you all deal the same way.

the reason not to "preset the board" is that the board can become fouled and ruin the hand.

Its very easy to hit one over as you deal, someone to muck a bit carelessly and flip a card over or spill a drink. Accidents happen and can happen often in bizarre ways. its wise for to leave dealing board until the correct time.

The reason you burn a card immediately before you turn the next street is to prevent people reading marks on the back of the cards. If you are using an older deck it is likely that each card can have unique marks. if they are on the table the whole hand then it can be easy for someone to memorise key marks.
Sure "you guys are all friends and no-one would do that". But why tempt someone if you dont need to?

If the guy dealing is still in the hand at the flop then he simply needs to put his cards down under a protector, pick up the deck, burn and turn and set the deck back down under a protector. Use the dealer button or a small paperweight for this. (keep it away from the muck ie deck on the left muck on the right).
This way the deck remains un fouled, and if any cards are marked they remain hidden and no board card can be flipped by accident.

Also if the dealer is still in the hand a folded player can take over duties to burn and turn the board if you wish.

Unless your playing partners are adept at stacking the cards then I doubt they are gaining an advantage by dealing that way. Now if they only do this sometimes, then they may be doing it when they know there is a certain card about to be delt. As for pre-set boards, Pokerjack's comment explains why this can be used to one's advantage. The best way to speed play is to use two decks and have the dealer of the next hand shuffle them during the current hand and have them ready to go. This is done in casinos using an auto-shuffler for this very reason. Should you do this, make sure they are decks of two different colors to help avoid the cards getting mixed together.

If you do this make sure to have 2 different colour decks ;-) and that (even with 2 different colours) be careful the decks dont get mixed.

Sounds silly, but I have actually seen this happen in a game, after I made the same warning.
"oh dont be silly, the decks are different colours they won't get mixed."
20 minutes later, "there are 2 queen of spades here!"

It only takes a fraction of a second and some careless card handling and another hand is ruined.

The best way is to make sure that each person can deal and shuffle without spraying the cards everywhere. Im lucky I know a lot of professional dealer and we play home games, with a little practice anyone can shuffle like a pro and keep the game secure. If someone can't then dont let them, they will slow the game down and be prone to error. Make them practice.
