Has anyone tried talking poker with players not on the level as you? I recently started playing home games and it's just funny listening to the conversations other players have with each other. And since its a friendly game, I try to explain some basic, profitible concepts with them, but it doesn't go anywhere.

I 3bet AA in LP against an UTG raiser that is a call station that likes play and chase a lot of draw hands. The flop is KJ2 rainbow and I shove my 2.5K stack into about about 1.5K. UTG snap calls with AQs, blank turn, and hits a 10 on the river.

We get conversations like this:

Player: That was a bad shove there.

Me: Why? I got him to snap call with a gutshot and 1 over for almost 80% of his stack.

Player: But he hit his straight.

Me: That doesn't matter. I got his chips when I was a huge favorite.

Player: You lost all your chips, though.

Me: Yeah, he hit is 4 outer. Oh, well. I'd do the same thing in the same situation against him.

Player: I would've just checked the turn and river and see what comes out. I already have a lot of chips in and the pot is big, so I dont want to risk anymore. If a 9, 10, Q, A comes out, Im ready to fold. If not, I bet it and I take the pot.

Me: You're losing so much value, though. Shoving here allows me to win 2 ways: either I take the pot down or he calls me with a weak hand and I double up over 80% of the time. By checking, I can only win the pot if he doesn't hit but I lose out on the additional 2.5K because he's folding to any bet on a missed draw.

Player: Yeah, but you also have to consider that he gets really lucky and he hits his draws a lot. I factor in who the lucky players are and I never go all in against them.

Me: Oh.

Of course, here I am, a player that has busted from a tournament, trying to explain why my play is profitable in that situation.

Anyway, I'll share more funny convos as they happen. I'd love to hear any of yours if you have any.

Well, sometimes) in live tournaments and happens more often)
Well, actually live tournament players are commonly found which prove their case when they went with 910 to your raised from the button with an ace and a queen and catch a gutshot straight on the river) in this feature as well as live and online tournaments.

i dont bother talking to fish about why their play is wrong. Especially if they are hard headed and aren't open to learning.

It's a complete waste of time and you will only manage to get annoyed.

I try to keep my conversations with fish limited to something like this:

Player: That was a bad shove there.

Me: Yeah, I suck. Oh well, now that I'm out of the tournament, want to start a cash game?

I dont bother anymore either.

We play an annual game with a few mates, I won the first few years, and it was tough getting the players together after that. Now I just use the game as an excuse to play bad, get drunk and have fun, this game is coming up in December again, and I really do not want go away as a big winner, losing a bit is fine :)

You can argue with these guys till you are blue in the face, they know better :D

Luck is a main factor in their play not the percentages. I have tried to tell my dad that luck is only a small part in poker but it goes in 1 ear and out the other. He believes there is no math part in poker, you are lucky or your not.

Kinda like playing a friendly round of golf with some know it all, unless you want to go home with my 3 iron shoved up your ***, just shut up, work on your own game & take my money. It's just a game. ;)

I get comments in home league tourneys like "Man, your bet button breaks when it's down to the wire", commenting on my push/fold (no limp) game at 10BB or less. This is from a player who will routinely limp/fold with around 6-8BB...in a turbo. Needless to say, it's a profitable league. :D

I have talked to some people that don't understand probability and what not just like OP. Most people that talk about their strategy tend to assume it is correct whether it is or not.

For the people calling the OP's friend stupid. You have to understand that most fish aren't as into the game as you and that you were probably once like them in your thinking. Maybe not to the extent of OP's friend, but you've probably once believed some crazy stuff about strategy.

I remember there was a time when I didn't know much at all. I developed a strategy where I only played Ax hands preflop. In my mind I thought "hey aces hit the highest card on the board more often. Therefore I'm more likely to win." I barely understood the game at all at that point, but now I am fairly decent and have a considerable edge in most of the games I play. Looking back it seems crazy that I once played like that, but everyone sucks when they start out.

Fish aren't necessarily stupid, they just sometimes lack experience.

Jackboy

Player: Yeah, but you also have to consider that he gets really lucky and he hits his draws a lot. I factor in who the lucky players are and I never go all in against them.

At one of our recent 5€-Cash-Games at a friend´s house, there was this unbelievable streak of luck that one guy had. He was literally holding AJ, KJ or JJ for like 10 out of 15 hands in a row!
Mostly he just called it all the way through, for example pocket J´s when the flop came AK5 rainbow, turn came whatever....river J and he won against AK.

He was really winning every pot he played at with Jack-pair or three Jacks.

After a while someone even said preflop :"If theres a Jack on the flop, I´ll fold anyways. Don´t wanna lose against Jackboy again!"

Flop showed 2,5,J. of course he didn´t fold, raised into Jackboy, who just called as usual, Turn showed a Q. Raise again, Jackboy calls. River shows 3.
The other guy showed 2-5, and lost against Jackboy who held J3.

It was really like this guy was David Copperfield or something.

After a few of these hands, someone (I think it was me...) said:

"Hey man, you got them Jacks up your sleeve or what?^^" (but in a funny way, not really accusing)

he replied:

"Are you kidding? I think I just developed a really good strategy!" in a totally confident and serious voice.

No need to tell you that everybody just fell off their chairs laughing...I mean what kind of strategy is this? Having Jacks all the time is not a strategy...:)

:jd4: :jd4: :jd4:

But I like our games because of the funny atmosphere, and the chit-chat in between and of course the stories I just told you, we´re always having fun! I wouldn´t trade it for anything!
(although on that day, I blew my whole stack with a full house because of a better full house...:D )
