Owen Gaines (QTip) is an instructor on Drag the Bar and has written 3 well regarded poker books.

http://www.qtippoker.com/

In the course of a thread about how to improve CC the idea of having a study group/.thread built around a poker book with involvement from the author came up.

Drag the Bar has done a lot with CC in the past and Dakota has said that if we can get enough people to commit to it she could almost certainly get Owen to participate in a study group based around one of his books. We would need at least 6 or 7 people but of course more is better.

What would be expected from us would be to of course agree on a book and then I think we could probably cover a chapter a week. Read the chapter and discuss in detail.

I would be willing to post some sort of chapter summary or outline on a weekly basis but please understand that this is no substitute for reading the material.

If you are interested in doing this and willing to put in the effort please post in this thread or PM me or one of the mods. Please indicate which book you would like to cover.

As soon as we have enough people committed and a book selected I will follow up with Dakota so she can set things up with Owen.

FWIW my choice of book would be "Hole Card Confessions" but "Poker Perspectives" or "Poker Math that Matters" would be great also and I will happily join in with what is agreed upon.

MODs: I don't do a lot of this stuff so please move or edit as you see fit.

Bill

Since I am not familiar with his books, can you tell me (and others) what player level this book deals with (beginner, intermediate, advanced, expert, etc)

We won't be watching each other's screens.

I participated in a group study Owen did on Poker Math That Matters. This was the first one Owen had done and once tech was worked out it turned out really good. I would love to do HCC with him.

Begginners and advances players would benefit equally imo. The two i've read were good because you could be just learning 2nl and still learn lots or struggling to beat 50-100nl for a decent winrate and still learn just as much, if that makes any sense.

In for HCC and I'd say it's a book aimed at micro to small stakes players. Owen is a great teacher so I'm sure getting him to go through the book with us will be a great added benefit to reading the book itself.

Most likely to start end of January or Feb (depending on Owen obviously) because we'll want to give everyone enough time to get the book and read through it before starting.

I'm in just give me enough time to get the book, will probably have to order it so 2 weeks would be a good leeway.

Before placing orders we probably should talk to Owen first. Not that the book itself isn't worth reading, it certainly is, but I don't want anyone getting upset if they order the book and then the group falls through because Owen has other commitments or whatever.

Very true, we cant all just expect Owen to just come give us kids his wisdom! If it doesn't work out like that then maybe those of us interested could still discuss certain chapters together anyways and get some discussion going that revolves/expands on certain ideas. Maybe with our own hand histories and how we've tried applying certain chapters to our game... just an idea

This sounds marvelous! I'm a huge Owen fan too--HCC sounds perfect as I haven't read that one yet.
