All,

My five friends and I (All poker nuts) have decided to have a weekly game at my house. We have invested in the table and all the trimmings so are ready to go.

However, the maximum we can play for is 5 hours.

I was thinking of playing NL with a $5 dollar buy in getting you 1500 chips.

What we don´t want is for someone to bust and be sitting there for ages so what we thought we would do is:

All buy in for $5 and play for 45 minutes max. Chip leader at this time takes the money.

Does this sound ok or has anyone got a better idea. This way you do not have to wait a long time should you get busted

Thanks

u might want to consider just playing a cash game (5 hours is a great time limit for such a thing and that way no one ever has to sit out), unless you're really committed to playing tournament style, in which case, people are bound to have to sit out for awhile. your idea for a 45 minute time limit is fine though, i suppose, if everyone agrees to it, though it really probably wouldn't be enough time for such a game unless you run a really fast blind structure

It sounds like a cash game would be much more fun. If you'll only play the tournament for 45 minutes I don't think a cash game would be all that differeant anyways.

The easiest thing to do is have the blinds increase in a short period of time. Either raise the blinds every time the dealer button goes around once around the table or every X minutes.

Does this sound ok or has anyone got a better idea. This way you do not have to wait a long time should you get busted

You could play a rebuy? If you have enough chips, you could play a $3 rebuy or something like that. It pushes the chip stacks up too, you just need to remember to increase the blinds on a shorter level, like say 10 mins or something

Yeah me and my buddies play that 1500 chip, $5 buyin format alot. I can't stand it, when you get eliminated we've had HU for an hour + in a 5 person $5 game. I much prefer to just play cash game, if you play .25/.50+ you can lose alot of money. I would recommend just playing .10/.25 NL cash game with a $20 buyin (10 .10 chips) (1 $5 chip) (16 .25 Chips) (10 $1 chips) . The buyin usually lasts a long time and aslong as it's not an all in fest noone should lose more than $40, $60 tops. Pretty good cash game format, I play it often. Or if you want to mix it up you could buy one of those little books with all the random games like blind mans bluff, jacks or better and just play dealer's choice that's always fun.

If you want to play a tourney, give this a go :-

Starting chips 2000 each
Starting blinds 50/100

Blinds double every 9 minutes

No tourney will last longer than 45 mins

Cash game is the way to go here.. You can play for as long as you like, no time constraints.. As long as you don't bust out and have to re-buy you can play all night.. My buddies and I have incorporated a schedule in which we play tournament style one week and cash games the next.. Good system and alot of fun.. I like Great Danes suggestion to a point however I feel that making the blinds increase in 9 minute increments makes it too much of a crapshoot.. It will all come down to who gets the better cards, not how you play the cards you get.. I understand that he is making a suggestion which follows the parameters that you mentioned but it just seems like the winner would be left up to luck more so than skill.

Me and my buddies play $20 SNG, we hand out $20 in chips and the blinds start at 0.25/0.50 and double every 15 to 25 mins depending on how fast you want the game. At 20min blinds, the game will take anywere from 1 hour to 1-1/2hrs. We have had 30-min games and 2-hour games. If we have 8-guys then we pay 100/40/20, any less and we only pay top-2, 80/60, 80/40, 80/20 or $80.00 in 4-handed. We usually get in 3-games a night playing from 8:00-12:30 I like it better than a cash game. I have been to other home games but I really like this format, it's gives you a choice of what style you want to play, fast or tight.

What we do is sometimes we start with less chips say 500 instead of 1500 but also we have a cash game going at the same time always, as some don't like the long play in trnys, and everyone playin the tourney style can play also, sort like multi tabling. The early departures still have a game going while they wait, most times they just lost so want some cash game action ;)
