Heads up NL SnG's

Trying to Improve my Heads up Game.

Was interested in those who play these alot. What is your winning % ? Or what is a good winning %?

Seems like these games can have alot of swings and when you take in consideration the rake, might be hard to grind a bank roll.

Give me any of your thoughts.

I played these off and on. If you get hot with these, then you can get really hot, however the same applies the other way. The best strategy I have found is making sure you track each and every game you play and NOT move up to recoup your losses. I am very guilty of this. I suggest you dont play more than 1 at a time as well. Maybe 2 if you are really good. It is possible to make a lot of money playing these. Just stay within your bankroll.

On pokerstars there are several games in the $5 range. Here they are along with the percentage of wins you need to break even.

$5 +$.25 for regular HU game. 52.5%
$5 +$.25 for 4 player HU game. 26.25% (must win two rounds in a row this %)
$6 +$.25 for a turbo HU game. 52.083%
$5.25 +$.25 for no blind increases (15/30). 52.38%
$5.50 + $.25 for deep-stack, no blind increases (5/10 blinds). 52.27%


So basically, you need to win about 53% to be a winning player. I assume it's about the same on Full Tilt. Let me look...

4 player games on Full Tilt are $5 +$.40 so you need to win 27% to break even. But otherwise it looks about the same.

Okay, so basically if you always get it all-in when you are 60% to win, you'll average about a 7% ROI.

I've got a 3.6% ROI over close to 300 games at the $2 level and a 22% ROI over about 150 of the four-player HU shootouts, also at $2 (both on Full Tilt).

Yes it's absolutely an evil swingy bugger of a format and while it's certainly possible to grind a roll from it there are probably easier games.

One thing to think about: do you want to improve your HU game for the sake of improving your HU game, or do you specifically want to do better when you get to the HU stage of a tournament / SnG?

Reason I ask is the two are actually very different - the end of tournament variety is almost always played with short stacks so it's very much about push or fold decisions whereas a dedicated HU game is a lot more about reads, image management and carefully placed aggression.

I think the 4 man HU are far better than 2 man.......

have to win 2 matches but you're only against 1 player at a time...nearly the same as 1 match that got back to even in the middle.......

compared to 2 man HU....with twice the prize ............and rake* being smaller in relation to prize, the 4 man has a much lower win rate needed to be profitable

*Pstars has same rake% for all HU matches....much better deal than FT where rake in 4 man is anywhere from 33% - 60% more rake than the 2 man

if you want to improve your HU game don't play HU SNG's.

HU SNG'ers are really lol postflop because theyre not deep at all
