Was playing not too long ago *of course* and there happened to be a bunch of hands that i was *for lack of better words* really really afraid to call on. So i of course folded *for example 7/8...then a 7/8 appears on the flop* and then i remember something someone once said ..In poker you have to have "Guts". Im of course assuming he means that you should have this in order to call with certain hands...my thing is that im lacking THAT...i dont have it at all from the looks of things.
Dont get me wrong there are some times when i simply dont care and say "ah what the hell ill call in mr.All in with 4/8" then strike it big with 2pair of a beautiful house...but that wantingness to do that has left me. Is it because im now on the realization that i have something to lose if i do this ? Then the thought comes that "i could lose my tournament life if i call this and it turns out to be for the worst". I guess my question *other than the question in bold* is .."What does it mean to you to have Poker Guts..or poker hutspa? and How "do" you and how "did" you go about obtaining poker guts? Is it something learned from years of playing or is it the ignorance is bliss type of thing ? Better yet is it a "I just know these things will turn out for the best so i do what i want" type of situation ?

I hope that all made sense. Thanks in advance.

Having guts isnt so much calling with terrible cards hoping to hit two pair. To be honest at the lower stakes you dont typically need to much guts or gamble to be successful as straight forward poker will be fine. Now to be great at higher stakes poker you need to have the guts to triple barrel or moves of the like with draws or air because you think your opponent has the capability to fold almost his entire range.

Dont call with shitty cards "knowing" they will hit, it doesnt make sense and it terrible poker and not what anyone who knows what they are talking about meant.

Another case I can think of that is actually much more applicable is being agressive in tournies, most notable around the bubble. Going all in if you are short staked or putting pressure on weak players is typically good, especially around the bubble as nobody wants to go out. Its not good to have the mindset that all you hope for is to money, the money is at the end and stealing becomes pretty easy around the bubble and should be taken advantage of.

But no, do not call with bad cards. raise to steal, fire a c bet when you didnt hit, these are needed and take guts I suppose. The more you play the more comfortable you will get, but i would not try anything fancy at lower stakes and not fold your way to the money if there are good opportunities to get some easy chips.

Guts isn't playing 8/4 and praying to hit a boat on the flop.

Guts is raising with kings, having an ace on the flop, and reading your opponent to not have an ace when he pushes all-in.

Guts is firing a 3rd bet on the river when you're pretty sure your opponent is bluffing.

Basically guts is playing well even when its a scary situation, not playing poorly and hoping to hit big.

Guts to me: calling small raises with pocket 5's, for example, is not scary, but once people bet after the flop playing with pockets like those, well it's all about judgment, and I don't have the guts to play through hands with that and throw it away at the right time. Whenever I see a face card that's higher ,and I have not hit my set, and I am isolated against 1 other person, it's just ...... uncomfortable..
